My son has had a cough for a couple of weeks now only during the night which disturbs his sleep but does not seem to bother him too much. Recently it has started to sound quite violent and this morning we woke up to find a dark red/brown mark on his sheet maybe around a £2 coin size. We put him down to sleep again tonight and the persistent cough is back and now a pea size light pink/red mark is on his sheet.

This is obviously making me worry however I'm unsure if I should take him to a&e the thing is tend to take him for everything as I never know if things can wait so really looking for some advice.

Thanks in advance! X

I'd ring NHS direct - it's 111 from any landline or mobile free of charge. They will run through a series of questions for you and advise what to do next. Hope he's ok.

I have noticed this before when my nephew (then 4) had a bad cough. I took him to the doctor who said it was just where his throat was sore and irritated from the act of coughing. Obviously if there is a lot of blood you need to go to a and e. otherwise, I would just go to the gp on Monday and get him checked out. Good luck and try not to worry.

Is it definitely from coughing or could he have had a nosebleed? Have a look to see if there is any dry blood around his nostrils.

Thank you for responding everyone he is coughing really hard and all through the night.

Yeah it is definately blood from his mouth/throat/chest I checked him all over this morning when I first noticed it and there was no sign of blood anywhere.

Its really worrying x.

Hope he's ok today

If he seems well with no fever I wouldn't get to stressed about it and would just go to GP tomorrow.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 08/12/2013 10:32

Can you try and get him to see an out of hours GP today? If the cough has got worse, you should get him checked out.

Poor little boy, how is he this morning?

welovetopsyandtim · 08/12/2013 10:36

We had exactly this at about the same age. I got pretty worried. Our doctor wasnt concerned and said it was the act of coughing which i think made blood vessels burst. Supposedly not harmful or painful.

Obvioysly if it persists. Is a lot of blood or accompanied by high fever then this is more of a concern.

persistent night time cough can be an indication of asthma

BramblyHedge · 08/12/2013 10:38

Nightime coughing can be a sign of asthma so I'd get it checked out

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/12/2013 10:38

It can but IME coughs can take weeks to go after a virus and are often worse at night

mummyfirsttime · 08/12/2013 11:51

Hey everyone, we moved him into his travel cot in our room last night to keep an eye on him. He is perfectly fine this morning as usual after a night of coughing!

Asthma is what I was worried about as both myself and dp have this.

Its not a lot of blood but noticeable last night and a bit more the night before. His breathing sounds fine during the day so I will see if we can hold off until tomorrow for a gp appointment.

I feel like I'm paranoid but surely to fine blood on your babys sheet is cause for concern.

Thank you for all you support once again!

Xx
