Chicken pox! Will DD1 have to miss nativity on Thurs?

poppycock6 · 07/12/2013 08:09

Obvious chicken pox spots today with blisters. DD2 has just had it and was covered but there doesn't seem to be as many on DD1.
She's supposed to be in the nativity on Thurs and Frid and is really excited about it. Do you think she should be ok by then or should I keep her off for the week?

TIA

Poppy - you can't tell yet as it depends on whether all the spots have scabbed or not….I ended up doing daily checks with mine. You may just be OK but I suspect it will be touch and go.

knittedslippersx3 · 07/12/2013 08:13

I don't think she'll make the nativity.Hmm
My dd had chicken pox when she was in year 5 and was off school for 2 weeks! Hers as a pretty bad case though.

mmmmsleep · 07/12/2013 08:16

the official rule is 5d from the start of the rash to be isolated but if still getting any new spots certainly not. hope she's feeling ok

cathpip · 07/12/2013 08:24

When dd had them the spots didn't fully come out till day 4, but if they have all scabbed over by Thursday!? I would check with the school to be on the safe side. It's a crap time of year to get them ds came down with them on Xmas eve and dd on new years eve. :(

IDontDoIroning · 07/12/2013 08:29

It's usually 5 or 6 days but the spots should all be crusted over so it depends on when the last spot comes out.
I think it will be touch and go.

If there's a chance she is infectious she should be kept at home. In a confined space like a school hall these will be lots of children and adults mums who could be possibly pregnant and elderly gps who may have health problems.

SoupDragon · 07/12/2013 08:30

I think it's unlikely. I would be extra careful to try and avoid passing it on this close to Christmas.

This^
I expect there will be a few more children with it on Thursday if your daughter has been incubating it. It looks very unlikely that she will be doing the nativity I'm afraid. I hope she feels better soon.

Rooners · 07/12/2013 16:35

I think apart from the actual risk there is also the perceived risk to people if she looks ill, which will make them anxious - we had to leave a party over the summer in a similar situation, because it would have been rude to ask the parents whether or not she was still contagious.

poppycock6 · 08/12/2013 04:59

Thanks all for your replies. It's looking like she's going to have to miss it unfortunately along with her parties Sad She's covered in them now and they haven't all broken out yet. Bad timing but hey ho!

It's a shame but these things do happen - DD had to miss her dance show when she had chicken pox. She was right at the end of chicken pox so borderline but I couldn't take the risk of passing it on. Hope your DD is better soon and isn't too ill and miserable with it!

poppycock6 · 08/12/2013 08:40

Thanks soupdragon. Yes it's a shame but not worth the risk. She has bad eczema so I think she's going to have a rotten time with it too judging by the state of her this morning Sad

Oh poor thing :(. On the bright side, at least she'll be over it by Christmas. What a shame that she'll miss her parties and nativity though.

mrscog · 08/12/2013 08:54

Ds had cp earlier this year. Be religious with piriton dosing and apply tons of calamine regularly along with oaty baths - DS had it quite bad but didn't suffer too badly using this 'triad' ! Hope she's not too sad about the nativity.

insancerre · 08/12/2013 09:10

in our setting we follow the advice from the hpa which gives 5 days exclsion, so following that advce the earliest she could go back is friday

BeaWheesht · 08/12/2013 09:44

Poor girl :(

When dd had them she was all crusted over by day 4/5 but with ds he was still contagious on day 8/9.

JessieEssex · 08/12/2013 10:07

I was about to post a very similar question! DD1 aged 3 had her first spots on Friday night and now has lots on her tummy, back and ears. Only a few have blistered or burst. Do they all blister or will some go away without blistering? She has her nativity assembly on Friday so it's touch and go, but if school follow the five day rule then she'll be ok.
I'm watching poor old 9mo DD2 closely... Chances are she'll break out over Xmas Hmm

Thecircle · 08/12/2013 10:15

Ds has just gotten over chicken pox and some lovely posters on here recommended vira soothe for the spots.

I couldn't recommend it highly enough myself now. The only spots that bothered ds were on his bum, and the vira soothe helped those massively. He never itched any other spots at all after I started using it

It's expensive but well worth it for us, helped loads more than calamine. I used piriton too.

Thecircle · 08/12/2013 10:16

Meant to add that they scanned pretty quickly after I'd started to use it too- worth a try maybe

Thecircle · 08/12/2013 10:16

*scabbed!

Manchesterhistorygirl · 08/12/2013 10:19

What rotten luck, when ds1 had them he was breaking out for two weeks! The first spots arrived on the day I found out I was pregnant with ds2! And we were just about to complete on our house sale.

It's like the spots know when the most inconvenient time is! I hope your dd is better soon.

lalamumto3 · 08/12/2013 10:25

So sorry she has got chicken pox, and will miss the play.

The other thing to be aware of is that any one who is imuno compromised could be made very ill if they catch chicken pox. That includes anyone having chemotherapy for example.

Hope she feels better soon.

poppycock6 · 08/12/2013 21:09

Thanks again. I'll have a look for the vira soothe. She's been in tears with the itching today and says they're painful too. She's covered in them and has already created some potholes with the scratching Sad Chemist recommended Eurax when dd2 had it and it really helped but dd1 can't bear it as it stings her. Have given her an oat bath and that definitely helped. We're on with the piriton too.

We used viralsoothe for ds1 (not too bad a case) but poxclin for ds2 who was covered. Mine got it one after the other the week I went back after maternity leave Hmm
