Anyone??

wizzler · 06/12/2013 21:39

No experience but you sound at your wits end so thought someone should post... ring NHS Direct or whatever its called now .. How old is DD ?

ServicePlease · 06/12/2013 21:41

What is the medicine? Is it Ovex?

SauceForTheGander · 06/12/2013 21:41

She's 3 - will ring. Thought MN would be quicker.

DH out tonight - DD hysterical but calming. DS8 looking after DS1 as he's terrified - terrible evening!!

Wigeon · 06/12/2013 21:43

Are you sure it's the threadworms which are making her scream? Am surprised that she sounds in agony - could it be anything else?

In the meantime, I've found a generous amount of sudocream on and around the arsehole helps...apparently it stops them secreting the liquid which makes it so itchy.

ServicePlease · 06/12/2013 21:44

Once they have had ovex it WILL work by the morning. You can try applying some sudacrem/vaseline as a 'look i'm doing something to help' but you will need to wait for the medicine to work.

I don't think NHS direct will be able to do much other than get you to try and calm her down and sleep. TV distraction and cuddles work best here

Madamecastafiore · 06/12/2013 21:44

Could you stick her in the bath?

Wigeon · 06/12/2013 21:44

Also, have you had a look actually at her bum? If you can see any actual threadworms, wipe them off with a tissue (and then wash your hands v thoroughly!).

ServicePlease · 06/12/2013 21:45

Wigeon - DD1 has been really freaked out by it. Just a very odd/unknown sensation rather than pain I think

BuggedByJake · 06/12/2013 21:45

In my experience it will pass & she'll settle down for the night. The medicine works quickly so she should be fine tomorrow.

ThermoLobster · 06/12/2013 21:45

Just wanted to send get well wishes to your DD. is it definitely worms? DD1 had them but no discomfort. Just saw one! The medicine made her poorly though!
Hope you get her sorted and hope your boys settle.

snowman1 · 06/12/2013 21:45

Hi my daughter has just had a batch of these! Apparently
It is the mucus produced from
Laying the eggs. I would give her bottom a wash with a flannel, put it straight in the wash to avoid spreading the eggs. I have put thrush cream on her too , a bit
Of vasiline around her bottom apparently
Deters them from
Laying. If she is in as much discomfort as you describe throw everything at it! And get some worming tabs and
Get cleaning in the morning!

mercibucket · 06/12/2013 21:46

vaseline helps reduce itching

Wigeon · 06/12/2013 21:47

Service - yes, am v sympathetic, she's only 3, but "agony" just seemed a bit odd. But agree it could just be that she's just upset by the weird unpleasant feeling.

ServicePlease · 06/12/2013 21:48

Sorry wigeon - didn't mean to come across as abrasive! Am Mnetting, drinking wine, watching TV and stroking the cat. A tad distracted and clearly missing any pleasantries Grin

MinnieBar · 06/12/2013 21:50

DD1 gets v upset by them. Your DD won't like it, but have a good look (the buggers are so thin and small it's easy to miss them) to make sure she's free of them, then put loads of sudocrem all over so if there's any more they can't get through. That usually works for us. Plus if she sucks any fingers make sure the nails are short. Good luck.

DeWe · 06/12/2013 21:50

Put her in the bath, that will wash them off. When she comes out put a blob of thick cream (like sudocrem) on the anus. Really thick, so the worms can't get out.

Permanentlyexhausted · 06/12/2013 21:51

Any cream will help relieve the itching. I've used sudocrem and savlon in the past.

If she's writhing around in agony, could the medicine have given her an upset tummy? It's certainly one of the side-effects with the Ovex stuff. It should say on the leaflet.

mineofuselessinformation · 06/12/2013 21:53

One of my dcs was hysterical like this with worms - it's horrible. Hopefully she will settle soon.

SauceForTheGander · 06/12/2013 21:55

Thank you all. She's stopped screaming. DD is a full on patient whatever the issue but she was writhing - she had her dose at lunch time so I guess tomorrow night will be better. She's trying to scratch, I've held cold flannel. My sodding nappy cream has disappeared. I've sent DH angry text who is on rare night out for Xmas work do. He's always bloody moving it!

I've not seen a worm but confirmed today by doctor. No examination but based on my description. I've taken medicine and DS8 has too but doc couldn't prescribe the baby one for some reason her system didn't allow??

Will do a Nivea hunt ..

Buy some pumpkin seeds for her to eat, maybe mixed with raisins to make it sweet. The compound in them paralyses the worms and this way they come out with the next bowel movement. It is a nice snack too.

Follow the ovex guidelines for two weeks, cut her nails short, daily baths ( real wash around anus, not just playing in water like mine do normally), Hoover around bed, etc. these beasts are a real pain. They will go but they have a long life cycle.

Good luck. Both my DDs had them at various times. NHS site is good on this.

TheRaniOfYawn · 06/12/2013 22:00

I could have posted pretty much exactly the same last night. DS was hysterical and cried for an hour until he fell asleep (missing his dinner).

He's really badly invested and I could see lots of worms crawling out. He's been fine today, so I'm hoping that the medicine worked.

FrequentFlyerRandomDent · 06/12/2013 22:01

Vaseline around the anus works too.

SauceForTheGander · 06/12/2013 22:03

I did just think kicking around in the bath was enough tonight because she seemed fine. But then asleep for an hour and the screaming started and baby woken up and screaming.

Nasty bastard worms.

Off to Hoover while they are all up watching Dora...

Madamecastafiore · 06/12/2013 22:06

You need to wet dust bedroom too. The eggs are really easily spread and it's easy to miss them by just hoovering.
