Slapped cheek syndrome

DS1 and DS2 appear to have this, bright red blotchy cheeks just come on today. How long approx might they have to stay off school? Both were off last week with a tummy bug so this is not particularly welcome! Esp as DS2 has a big part in the Christmas play and will miss rehearsals. Oh well. Just want to know roughly.

Once the rash is out they are usually not infectious, so no need to keep them off school at all if they are otherwise OK in themselves. Rash can last quite a while, comes and goes.

Really? I didn't realise that. I'll ask the school tomorrow.

I caught this from my DS and had nasty joint pain for several days. I had no idea it was connected to him as I didn't have the same symptoms, ie no red cheeks. Thought I'd mention it just in case you suddenly start having achy hands and ankles!

Oh gosh yes thanks for that. I'll keep it in mind. DS3 is ok so far, I'm sure he'll get it at some point as it is supposed to be very infectious during the infectious period (ie before the rash).

A good few days. Remember that slapped cheek can be dangerous for pregnant ladies and also people who have some forms of cancer as it stops the bone marrow from working.
