DS 7 Constipated and holding for 11 days... help

I'm so stuck!

Our 7 year old DS has been holding his poo in for 11 days...This has been an on going issue since I stopped breast feeding him at 19 months. But this is the worst it's ever been...
Yesterday he was admitted into hospital, but he refused to drink any Movicol (he needs to drink 4 doses one day then 6 the next, then increase the dose by 2 each day, until he reaches the maximum of 12 doses in a day) It took him 2 & 1/2 hours to drink one dose, a registrar then told him, if he didn't drink he would have a tube pushed down his throat, obviously this tactic didn't work on DS, who cried.

My husband left the hospital with DS after 7 hours of trying to get him to drink.
The hospital want to readmit him if he doesn't drink the required dose, and there is the possibility of him having a tube 4 times!!!! This feels barbaric to me...
I don't know how to move this forward with him...I've explained that if he doesn't drink they will put a tube into his throat, he says" I can't drink that much". It puts him in a very powerful position not to drink but I don't think he's fully aware of the game he is playing...
DS has many issues including anxiety, enormous and often violent temper tantrums and very controlling behaviours and yes he is also incredibly loving and kind.
I don't want my son to have to be force fed a liquid!!! I don't know how to get him to drink...no amount of stickers or rewards work, he just manages to throw it back at us and say he doesn't care.!!!!

I don't want to react out of anger and let them do that to him, when there could be another way....I'm at my wits end...

If you can help with any suggestions it would be truly appreciated.

My dd had this same problem, she held for 13 days at her worst. She too would not entertain the idea of movicol etc. Is your ds afraid that a bm will cause pain? My dd was terrified, it's so hard to see them like that. The thing that worked for us was cracked linseed's (from a wholefood store or supermarket). The linseed's past through the digestive system and breakdown in the bowel. They form a jelly type substance which makes bm's much easier - they just slide out ( sounds gross but is such a relief !!) We gave her a couple of tablespoons on her food, oatmeal is good, or else she just ate them from the box, and plenty of liquids.
Good luck, i hope your ds is feeling easier soon.

Poor DS Sad

DD is (fortunately) a much less extreme holder despite plenty of fibre in her diet.

Thanks for the tip re linseeds.

My ds only aged 2 though has hirschsprungs disease which means he is severely constipated and has been hospitalised a few times as well as visiting the day ward in the day for enemas when he needs them.

You can dissolve the movicol in anything, we give it in milk still, or could you try a hot chocolate or milkshake? I think it's only 65mls that it has to be dissolved in so it's not a lot. It does taste foul otherwise.

You could also tell your ds that the alternative which my ds has is an enema or sometimes, worse, a bowel washout, which is like colonic irrigation and really not pleasant! Up to you on that one but that is what my ds has if he doesn't poo for a couple of days.

Grapes and satsumas also work for us, no bananas or rice.

Good luck!

Thank you for your messages...DS finally went to the loo...Feels like such a struggle for us all to cope with this and his very controlling behaviour. Feel like this is never going to end./emo/te/3.gif/emo/te/3.gif
