Hi

My daughters head circumference was on the 50th percentile at birth then at 1 week and 2 days later it went up to the 99.6th percentile ( the highest it goes on the chart I have ) what are peoples opinions on this? Would you be worried?

So soon after, I'd guess they measured wrong one of the times.

ShatnersBassoon · 26/11/2013 14:53

I would doubt one or all of the measurements.

Has it been flagged up by a doctor? Had you noticed her head swelling rapidly?

kitkat098 · 26/11/2013 14:54

Forgot to mention she had fluid around the brain and bleeding in the brain, the health visitor mentioned it. So that's why im wondering if it has been caused by birth

What did the person doing the second measurement say? How is your DD in herself?

Head measurements are taken with a paper tape usually and can vary depending on person doing it.

That said, I would want to get my DC checked out, but I would be thinking one of the measurements was a mistake especially if my DC was happy in herself.

ShatnersBassoon · 26/11/2013 14:56

See the GP then. Have you measured her head yourself, to see if the surprisingly large measurement is correct?

EyeoftheStorm · 26/11/2013 14:57

Posted before I saw there was bleeding and fluid.

Was your DD premature, kitkat? DS2 has hydrocephalus from brain bleeds and his head grew steadily over a few months. Your DD should really be seeing a paediatrician in this case.

worldgonecrazy · 26/11/2013 14:59

I would suspect it is more likely that it was measured incorrectly. Does it look noticeably larger?

What is your head circumference and that of your husband? I only ask because both myself and my husband have very large head circumferences and DD is also on the 99th centile, despite being average for height and 60% for weight.

kitkat098 · 26/11/2013 15:00

She has seen all specialists thats how we found the bleed in the brain and fluid..health visitor has just mentioned her head circumference grew rapidly so theyfailed to notice it when writting them down. I'm just wondering if this could have been causecauseher birth

My daughter had went limp in my partners arms and was rushed to hospital that's how this began. I just feel the health visitor failed to notice the growth, she has since mentioned it but its no good now? Shes such a lovely women but im racking my brains because deep down I think it has been from birth ( we dnt have a cause for it ) we just desperately want to get to the bottom of it

worldgonecrazy · 26/11/2013 15:03

Sorry - I also posted before I saw the bleeding and fluid. I would bypass the HV, and I would get a paediatrician's view on this.

kitkat098 · 26/11/2013 15:05

She has seen specialists and everything but we dont have a cause for this happening, only thing we have is her head circumference, if the head circumference is correct could this bleed and fluid be from her birth? This happened when she was 6 weeks old.

My daughter wasnt premature she was a week overdue very hard labour back to back, only 4hours in total, got stuck, heartbeat dropping, had to use the suction cap to help and she turned half way through delivery then she couldn't get any heat in her so was put in a incubator whilst I had a blood transfusions.

I dont want to alarm you but as the Mum of a child with severe congenital hydrocephalus then you need to get this checked. Hopefully it is just a glitch in the measurements but with her history I would not take any chances.
If she becomes unusually sleepy or starts vomiting (or both) then go to a&e

kitkat098 · 26/11/2013 15:15

She is now a healthy one year old with no disabilities or anything. She didnt need any operations or shunts. Youwouldnt know by looking at her. I just want to jnow if this health visior failed to do her job properly. This happendd when my daughter was 6 weeks old.

FoodieToo · 26/11/2013 16:28

Why are you not thanking your lucky stars your child is ok instead of racking your brain looking for someone to blame for something that worked out ok?

steeking · 26/11/2013 16:38

if she's fine now why do you want to look to blame someone . it may have been unrelated tp the birth and you'll probably never know . I could understand it if she had been disabled but you say she's normal .

EyeoftheStorm · 26/11/2013 17:48

And here's me worried your DD had hydrocephalus and all the associated problems.

I think you should just enjoy your DD. what you described needed neurologists and paediatricians, not a poor HV.

cestlavielife · 27/11/2013 15:53

"She is now a healthy one year old with no disabilities or anything"

so let it go .
it doesnt matter .
