Worms...I need some positive feedback!

An awful week with my two kids having discovered head lice last weekend and then worms a week later. I had never imagined in a million years that we would get worms, it's totally grossed me out. I've not read many positive stories on the internet about getting rid of them. How do you enforce strict hygiene on a 3 year old and a 5 year old? I feel like I have turned OCD overnight. Yesterday I washed every single thing that could possibly be washed and I want to do it all again today. My hands are already raw from repeatedly washing them. We might have had this in our house for months. I also feel that I should inform the school but I am worried about being seen as patient zero just because I have spoken up. Any positive stories about banishing these blighters would be welcome! thank you x

We had them once when DS was about 6. We took the treatment, changed the sheets and towels, and reminded him if he didn't wash his hands properly he'd have to have more tablets (he really didn't enjoy the tablets - it was like trying to chew a chgalky rennie!).

They've never returned.

If your children are thumb suckers or nail biters, the chances are that they will get thread worms again. Yes tell the school, they could have caught worms form another child there. I recall when my son was young we'd get a letter every now and then.

As to cutting down chances of getting them again, keep finger nails neatly trimmed, train them to use a nail brush when they wash hands at bed time and hammer home the importance of washing with water and soap after going to the loo. But, above all keep a dose of worm tablets in stock at home, enoigh to treat the whole family. Don't be grossed out, all children get worms at some point in their life.

I grew up in Africa. We were de-wormed as standard every six months ago. We hated those pills but had to be done. Worms are icky, but not end of the world. Grin

LM - did you get rid of them? We're on day 2 with DD and last night was night from hell! She had her medicine yesterday lunchtime so I'm hoping tonight she'll be pain free.

Last night there was back arching, writhing, hysterics and waking up every 2 or 3 hours ... Sad - been doing laundry all day and hands are chapped I've washed so and cleaned constantly!

LucyLasticKnickers · 07/12/2013 18:45

gosh, there shoudl be no pain. i only knew dd had them when i saw them wriggling in her potty!
just cut their nails, them the family the medicine.

threadworms dont casue anything apart from itchy bottoms

SauceForTheGander · 07/12/2013 20:34

She's in a lot of pain. Doctor said they may be in vagina and uretha that's causing unbearable itching. Loads of screaming and nighttime wakings... She's uncomfortable tonight - fingers crossed she stays asleep.

TheRaniOfYawn · 07/12/2013 20:40

Some people feel them more intensely than others. DS was hysterical with pain the night before last, but was fine once the tablets kicked in. We seem to get them once a year or so, but they clear up fairly quickly. I've been a bit half hearted with the hygiene this time round.

aldiconvert · 07/12/2013 20:41

Have they had medication ?
It works really quickly from my experience...
They are awful ...
Sounds daft but I routinely check bottoms every month or so since we had them to nip in bud before they really become infested .... Had three times in three years but never been a drama as detected early ... I keep medicine in house so can dose straight away if need be ... Good luck ...

SauceForTheGander · 07/12/2013 21:02

She's had Vermox yesterday. I'd hoped after a poo today that would be end of it.

DD is a pretty terrible sleeper and whenever she's ill gets even worse - she can get incredibly emotional and upset over something that my other DC doesn't register. So it might be that she's in lots of pain or that she can't handle the sensation. Last night was pretty upsetting though. She seemed tortured Sad

Anyway - I'm hijacking ..

aldiconvert · 08/12/2013 10:01

I only have boys and caught the critters early .... If they are really infested or if in girls and spread from bottom to other parts then I would imagine it will cause more discomfort - pain .... Possibly may need a re dose ? Sounds grim but have you had a look to see if any signs if life still ? My nephew had medicine but three days later was still itchy and still alive in stools so doctor re prescribed medicine .... I went on a mad clean first time round but was not quite as O c d second time ... I figured that even if my home is 100% clean ( ha) , they are picking them up at play group and school and becoming re infested that way , they are good at washing hands and I keep nails short but they are nail biters and thumb suckers .... My French friend says they routinely dose in France like an above post ... So common ... Sounds disgusting but one if those things .... Go back to doc though if still uncomfortable ....

When my friends dd had them she informed nursery and the manager said they don't actually have to inform parents in the way they do with slapped cheek, chicken pox, headlice etc but if my friend was happy for her to do so she would put it in the weekly email.

Indith · 08/12/2013 10:12

We've just had them. The dcs were crawling. Dd was saying it hurt to wee, probably because she had scratched so much and she was wetting herself at school because she didn't want to go. Ds2 was shouting "poo!" and squirming and crying. Ds1 was just itchy of bottom.

Wormed all 3 of them. It took 3-4 days to eliminate the blighters from they system. Bums washed and fresh pants first thing in morning. Bums washed and fresh pants for nights. I washed all bedding, washed all chairs and hoovered sofa plus hoovered and damp dusted house paying special attention to bedrooms as when you change the sheets you risk spreading eggs onto surfaces/floor which can live for up to 2 weeks so reinfect. Also washed all towels. For first 2/3 days I did fresh towels for every wash and fresh bedding daily then went back to normal routine for towels and bedding.

We gave them hand washing lessons so they know to scrub around nails.

We are now around 10 days post worming and all seems ok. I'll be reworming them at the 2 week mark though to make sure there is no reinfection. All except the baby as he reacted badly to the medicine and given that he is nappies his reinfection risk is lower especially if we are all wormed.

Indith · 08/12/2013 10:19

Sauceforthegander with girls there can be pain from scratching then it stings when they wee, they can also migrate to the vagina. But also the medication can cause stomach pains and diarrhea, it isn't a common side effect but does occur. Ds2 was horrible with it, in a lot of pain, very windy and horrible stinking splatty poo. It took the best part of a week for him to get back to normal.

kingbeat23 · 08/12/2013 10:44

Had them last year and as a pp said my nursery didn't inform other parents. I told parents close to my dd instead as I thought they had a right to know.

I did a treatment and cleaned absolutely EVERYTHING from curtains, skirting boards, floors. Toys got a 90 degree wash along with worn clothes, bedding, towels. Hard toys got a rub down with multisurface cleaner.

It was good as my flat needed a deep clean, I got to throw out stuff not wants nor played with.

Clean knickers in the morning after a wipe with a baby wipe. Clean knickers in the evening after a bath. Making sure hands are washed properly (hand over hand). Never had them back.

SauceForTheGander · 08/12/2013 17:27

Yes she has pooed herself a couple of times - the medicine has upset her tummy quite badly. But last night was loads better and feel like I've caught up on some sleep.

It's been a cycle of sheet cleaning, poo cleaning and bottom wiping / inspections. We know how to live eh?

Thank you everyone. I was wondering whether to let her go into nursery - or maybe collect before she has her packed lunch so she's not reinfected before her second dose in a fortnight.

I always made them wash hands but clearly not been on tip of it.
