Ketones and convulsions

My 23minth old had a seizure today lasting two minutes, roughly, and then was completely out of the count for 10. Horrific experience but the day has worn on and she is now very happy. She has had no temperature st all. She did have gastro on friday and sat and a loss of appetite.

The nurse has just told me that the glucose drip will be kept in over night a she has ketones in her urine. What does this mean in relation to her seizure?

Sound dry but utterly exhausted.

You can have a seizure due to low blood sugar. Ketones in the urine can be a sign of this.

My son had a seizure caused by the same thing when he was 13 months old, also after a gastro bug. Petrifying at the time, we were followed up at a major London hospital, where he had loads of tests, but they concluded it was just one if those things, and unlikely to happen again. He is now nearly 4, and they were right,it hasn't.
It took about a month for me to feel back to normal afterwards...it was so frightening at the time, I used to lie there at night with my heart beating so fast, reliving the whole thing, but life did return to normal fair quickl, and the whole nasty experience did fade from my mind.

Duh....forgot to say that my son's blood sugar had dropped incredibly low, and he had 'ketotic hypoglycemia', I believe it was called.

Sadly they don't think it was caused by after effects of gastro. Waiting for neurologist now.

At least she's in the right place and being checked out. Has she had a scan or any other tests?

DottyboutDots · 26/11/2013 08:44

Only bloods and chest xray. She is happy, it is caution I think. Drip out but I just have fear that I can't shake.

It must be very scary. Hope you get some answers soon although do be prepared for the fact that it might be an unexplained seizure, there isn't always a reason which can be detected after the event.

DottyboutDots · 26/11/2013 14:17

Unexplained, but that's better than a confirmed horror.

That's good news Dotty. Fingers crossed she never has another one. Unexplained single seizures are surprisingly common.

I'm unsure now. I passed out putting my eldest to bed instead of sleeping with the baby. She woke me up crying and she had vomited. Did I miss a seizure? Am waiting for a call back. She's sleepy today but fine otherwise.

It may be that the gastro bug is still hanging around. There are a lot of intermittent but prolonged vomiting bugs around at the moment.

Thank you so much. I don't why i am nigh on hysterical about this. She's my third and the other two have both had issues (brain trauma and severe rsv complications) and i coped so well with those but this little one is so normal and even cheekier than the others and I couldn't bear if there was something wrong. Just not strong enough. In RL I'm being rather chipper but it the unknown is just knawing away. Must get a grip!

No need for a grip, you are being chipper around her which is the important thing. You're bound to be worried and this is a safe place to express those worries without upsetting the DC's.

DottyboutDots · 27/11/2013 15:09

Thank you for your kind words. Hopefully, tomorrow morning we're another 24 hours in. Just time will tell I guess.
