What can I buy tonight to help impetigo, and can I put a dressing on it?

I am 99% sure ds has impetigo, he has had a cut on his nose for a few days, I noticed last night it was getting a bit worse, but he said he had picked it, just looking at it now I can see it's impetigo, it's raised and a bit weepy and looks painful.

I'll try and get him a doctors appointment tomorrow, which is always a bit hit and miss, but is there anything I can get him tonight to help it? Also does anyone know if I can put a dressing on it, google is giving me mixed answers.

TIA

When in doubt i use sudocreme. It provides a good barrier if nothing else and you could cover with a plaster to discourage picking.

Rooners · 25/11/2013 18:45

don't think you can buy it OTC but fucidin is what we had prescribed.

If you can get to an OOH you can get antibiotics started tonight.

tea tree oil always worth a try too

AngelsLieToKeepControl · 25/11/2013 19:03

I've just slathered it in sudocreme and put a plaster on it. I'll send dh past the supermarket on his way home from work to get tea tree oil, but I don't think the chemist will be open, but I'll check in the morning to see what otc cream I can buy for it, I'm not holding much hope of a doctors appointment for at least a couple of days.

Our OOH wouldn't take him for an appointment for impetigo, they are really strict here which is a joke considering how shit the doctor is.

I'm so paranoid about it, I had it once as a teenager and it was awful, I was covered in sores for ages so I want to nip this in the bud asap.

Thanks for the advice Flowers

Sorry, don't really know what I am talking about, but when I had it (at 24! on my chin, big wide crust) I kept putting stuff on it for it to stop oozing, but then I was told that the crust had blocked the fluid from coming out, and had caused the scar. So if I had it again I would let it ooze for as long/as much as possible.
How old is your son? Would he pick on the crust if it was not covered?

AngelsLieToKeepControl · 25/11/2013 20:42

Thanks, he is 12, but he is finding it itchy and is picking it without really thinking. Do you mean you wouldn't put cream on it, or wouldn't put a plaster on it?

It has a plaster on it just now, but I might put some gauze on it instead. to let it breathe a bit. It isn't massive and it isn't too deep or anything so I'm hoping it won't scar, and I'm hoping I have caught it early enough that it won't spread either.

When I had it it was a rather large patch on the chin, mine did not spread though not thanks to me as at the beginning I had no idea what it was.
If I were you I'd try to keep it as 'free to breathe' as possible, so gauze could be better than plaster.
I am sorry, I do not know how impetigo spreads, but if he was my child I'd dab the scar/oozing area carefully with gauze/cotton and water to remove any liquid and leave it untouched during the day and with a gauze during the night to protect the area.
What I was told might be crap, but a dermatologist told me that the crust was blocking the skin from regenerating, because the liquid was blocked between the skin and the scar. So any hole the liquid finds in the crust might speed up the healing. Also, he said that the area was scarred because I was putting on stuff all the time rather than letting the skin heal itself. So I stopped using anything at all. (Now I do not have a 'scar'. It just looks a bit uneven).

I hope this helps.

I had impetigo when I was kid and the only thing I remember being told was do not touch it and then touch somewhere else on your skin as it is contagious so will go to that area. I had it all over and it was a nightmare. Really hope your boy is ok x
