What's it all about? I don't understand the point of it: a part of me wants to decline it but another wonders whether this will invite questions.

What are your thoughts?

Way to monitor population health. Also a chance to inform parents who might not realise that their child has a problem.
My thoughts are that it's is a complete non-event.

well the vision check is to pick up on any problems you may not have noticed - it is done pre-school here and my son ended up being reffered to opthamology as a result.

The height and weight is simply to check how the child is doing and will identify if their are any issues there. A lot of people aren't comfortable with that bit but personally I don't see any issue with it and thing if there are any potential problems it is better to be aware so you can decide what action (if any is needed)

I think that the vision check is one of the most important things done in Year R. It was these people who spotted an anomaly with DS1's eye which it is unlikely would have been picked up by an optician.

Two bouts of laser surgery, a fantastic Consultant and three years later, we're very grateful for the check.

Not having the vision check in YR is my one regret for home educating my ds when he was young, his poor vision would have been picked up sooner if he'd had it.

Thanks for your replies. To be honest, I am uncomfortable having my young daughter's weight checked, so will decline - I check her height and weight myself occasionally and know that she isn't overweight.

I think it's prudent to arrange a vision check, though, which I shall do immediately.

The vision check at my DSs's school is done by the hospital (which has an extremely good eye dept) and is definitely worth having done. My GP said that DS1's condition wouldn't have been picked up by a regular optician.

we accepted height and weight check (its for monitoring population, I'm ok with that), non event at school they just do it on one day.

Declined sight and hearing test now - school nurse never confirmed who would be doing it, ds1 had sight test, was 'fine' no figures - took him to opticians as he was complaining words were blurry and he has lazy eye and needed glasses Hmm
ENT consultant advised against hearing test as ds's under his care (and we knew they couldn't hear Smile) but if you've never had it done that might be worth it if you have concerns
