Is it normal to be so very ill with chicken pox?

I naively thought the extent of chickenpox was just an annoying, itchy, all over rash.

5yo dd started getting a few spots on Fri night. By Sat morning, her back, front bum, tummy, chest and armpits were covered.

Yesterday they came up on her scalp, face and a few across her arms.

Today, there are a few more on her arms, and some on her hands and feet. Several on her face look extremely red and angry. There is one that has burst beneath her eye, and the skin around the eye is now red.

There is a huge yellow one beneath her nose and another on her chin, which also has a thick circle of red around them.

She's been feeling rundown for several weeks. Last week she had a tummy bug.

Since Sun, she's been really bad. Hardly eating. Coughing. Runny nose. Keeps getting very sweaty despite the fact it's frosty outside and i leave a window open for her when she's hot. Then goes very cold. So her temp is constantly up and down.

She's constipated. She's saying that her tummy feels like it needs to be sick, but no sick is coming out. She's barely left bed/the couch.

Today has been the worst. Absolutely soaked in sweat earlier despite the freezing cold temp and a window being open. Hasn't eaten in over 24 hours. Burst in to tears when i tried to put Sudo Cream on the 2 huge, yellow spots on her face. Says she's scared to look at herself because the spots scare her. And now she's finally napping.

She just seems so weak and drowsy and fragile.

I can't even take her out to get her a medicine. My Gp requires you to go pick up your prescription paper in person then take it to a chemist for the medicine. I don't even think there is a medicine that could help.

Any tips? Or even some reassurance that this is perfectly normal effects of CP? No idea who she has picked them up from.

Let us know how she is tomorrow. Really hope all is well and she is soon fully recovered. Best of luck.

CheckpointCharlie · 19/11/2013 21:54

Good point minesapint write it down OP. I have taken my dd to a and e before because she had had a temp for days and days with cp and had a couple of infected spots, she had antibios and was ok a couple of days after that.

Well done, hope she is ok.

TheArticFunky · 19/11/2013 21:55

It's good to get out it checked out. My ds was very poorly when he had chicken pox aged 5. He couldn't move or speak for about 4 days and we took him to hospital. There wasn't any complications it was just a very bad case.

supergreenuk · 19/11/2013 21:55

Poor thing. Hope she gets better soon.

NorthernLurker · 19/11/2013 21:57

I hope she's ok. Be persistent.

FlankShaftMcWap · 19/11/2013 22:06

I hope she's alright, hopefully they can make her more comfortable when you get there. Fingers crossed you're both home soon.

EweHaveGoatToBeKiddin · 19/11/2013 23:13

Hello. Back already!

Was seen very quickly. We're taken through A+E (which only had three people sitting waiting), then to a room in OOH. So no contact with anyone.

Had everything checked over. The lovely nurse just said it was infected CP. So we've been sent home with pink Penicillin, eye drops and dd's urine sample, which we've to hand in to the GP tomorrow. Nurse said that there was no blood or infection found, but there were some white blood cells. But she thinks this might just because dd has CP on her genitals, and they've gone into the urine stream. But we've to hand it to the GP tomorrow just to rule out any bugs etc.

Was told to contact again if cough worsens.

Thanks so much for all the advice earlier. I was a nervous wreck and now i feel so relieved. And even dd seems quite chirpy now she's had a bit of fresh air. Definitely staying inside from now on though. Feel awful enough about going out tonight as it is.

Bed time for us. Once again a big thank you. Thanks

It's good that you were seen in A&E, and also good that you have some ABs for the infected spots. Probably still best to be vigilant for the next few weeks (and especially the next few days) just in case- sounds like she has had a nasty dose.

Phew! Glad you home and dd a bit perkier. Hope the penicillin helps. :)

NorthernLurker · 19/11/2013 23:35

Glad you're home. Keep a very close eye on her and go back if anything changes. Did you see a doctor or only the nurse? Might be an idea to see your GP tomorrow in any case.

FlankShaftMcWap · 20/11/2013 07:00

Oh thank goodness Smile What did they say about the bruise marks that appeared? Is that normal?! I've got to say my heart turned over when I read that. I'm so glad she's ok! Good to hear she was a bit perkier too, hope this morning sees her improved again.

kelda · 20/11/2013 07:02

Glad she was seen yesterday and has antibiotics. I hope she will feel better quickly.

If she worsens, do not hesitate to take her back to the emergency doctor.

Suddengeekgirl · 20/11/2013 07:09

SO pleased she's got some ABs! :)

CP is really scary - everyone tells you it's just a standard childhood infection. But every so often it can be truly awful.

Hope you and dd get some sleep! Flowers

NorthernLurker · 20/11/2013 08:18

How is she today?

issynoho · 20/11/2013 09:11

So glad it's nothing more serious! You did absolutely the right thing. Get well soon wishes to your DD.

difficultpickle · 20/11/2013 09:29

You must be very relieved. I know I was shocked at how ill ds was bearing in mind that CP is viewed as a normal run of the mill childhood illness. I hope your dd starts to feel better soon.

MarthasHarbour · 20/11/2013 11:14

thank goodness Smile

hope she feels better soon

DeWe · 20/11/2013 11:20

Hope she's better soon.
My oldest was so mild with chickenpox she hardly noticed...
My other two were very ill, dd2 was only 6 months old and had so many spots they all ran into each other, ds got spots inside, the ones on his tongue looked really strange. Both had about 2-3 days of being really ill with the doctor coming to check on them at home morning and evening.
But once they started getting better they got better fairly quickly.

toffeesponge · 20/11/2013 13:13

I hope you got some sleep and that your DD is feeling better now she is on ABs.

Longfufu · 20/11/2013 15:42

Glad your DD is on the mend. I'm sorry to jump on this thread but my DS who is nearly 3 has CP right now, I've just taken him and his brother who is 3 months out for a walk in the pushchair as we needed some fresh air. DS with CP is fast asleep in the pushchair (this never happens). Dreading DS2 getting it. Quick question is it ok to bath them together or not?

beautifulgirls · 20/11/2013 15:49

Yes, bath them together as your DS2 is very likely to be infected already, though a lot depends on how much maternal immunity he has too. Can be harder to catch under a year old for that reason. DD2 had it at 9months old and actually was a lot less sick than her 2.5yr old sister was.

Kveta · 20/11/2013 16:26

I bathed my two together, and regret it, as DD got a far worse infection after spending every evening sticking her fingers in DS's spots in the bath!

TerrorMeSue · 20/11/2013 19:50

I would not bath them together. There is a high risk the baby will already have caught it, but why increase that risk unecessarily Confused
