Is it worth seeing the GP about this..?

DS (13 weeks) has a fairly pronounced forked gluteal fold (basically a big Y shape at the top of his butt crack!) and a very small, very shallow sacral dimple. I know these can possibly be a sign of spina bifida occulta, which my dad has, though it doesn't cause him any trouble. So I'm wondering if there's any point making a GP appointment or whether this would be an over reaction, since presumably even if it is SBO they wouldn't do anything about it? Neither the doctor at the hospital who did his newborn check, or the GP who did his 8 week one commented on it, but I got the feeling that neither were particularly experienced with babies Hmm

WWYD?

Signs of spina bifida occulta are things that both the paediatric doctor at the hospital who did his newborn check and the GP who did his 8 week check are specifically looking for. If you can see the skin at the base of his sacral dimple it is not of any medical concern. If neither of the doctors who have already examined your DS have mentioned anything I would not be worried.

Thanks Souper. Yes, can see the skin in the dimple and you're right, sure the doctors would have noticed/commented if it was anything to worry about. Will try to put it out of my mind!

i would mention it
i have known it not to be noticed until a child was 5 (years not months) and the mother pointed it out
no big deal, it sounds v small, but worth pointing out

I would mention it. Doctors aren't always right. As I've found out a few times.

Oh, more replies, cool! Smile

Hmm...I might mention it to the health visitor when I next get him weighed...although she'll probably just say to see the GP, but at least then I'll have the excuse that I've been told to get it checked and will feel less silly for bothering a doctor about it Hmm
