3 year old DS1 trembling in sleep

He has a respiratory virus I think (my 11 month old is just over it). DS1's fever is spiking, have given calpol and neurofen and he's in bed with me. He's woken twice to say he's Thirsty and gulped down water then gone back to sleep. He's wheezing and breathing fast (was breathing normally today) but what's worrying me is he's kind of tense and 'shaky' like when your blood sugar drops. He won't eat. Do I need to worry? I can't sleep and am lying here watching him.

I would phone NHS Direct and ask for advice I think.

Hope he's OK.

BigArea · 12/11/2013 01:21

I think is phone NHS direct if I were you - I have no idea but it does sound worrying

Phoned them and they were a bit useless, wasn't able to speak to a nurse or have a 'common sense' conversation, spoke to someone who said he must be seen within 6 hours so take him the walk in by 7.45. GP opens at 8 and he's fast asleep so I don't think waking him and dragging him down there is a good plan.

Oh how horrible for him, and you. When DD is ill I always want to swap places with her.

I think trust your instincts and don't hesitate to take him to OOH if you want him seen before the morning.

Bumping this for you in case of better advice.

Thank you all, his fever has come down and he's stopped trembling so going to let him sleep and just watch him all night! We 'll go down to GP first thing.

Oh phew. Glad he seems a bit better. It's so scary isn't it? Hope he keeps on improving.

BeaWheesht · 12/11/2013 06:45

Sounds like febrile rigours. Tbh I'd be more concerned about the wheeze.

theyoniwayisnorthwards · 12/11/2013 09:07

We have a GP appointment this morning at 10, he seems happy enough this morning but still wheezing. Spent last night waking every hour to check on him but think we made the right call not to wake him

How is he theyoni ?

theyoniwayisnorthwards · 12/11/2013 23:56

We were sent to A and E and then admitted overnight because his oxygen keeps dropping. He's fine in himself when his temp is down but it's likely to be a chest infection so he is on antibiotics. I made the wrong call and feel absolutely awful but trying to stay calm and just take care of him. I'll beat myself up when he's home safe again and err on the side of caution from now on.

Don't beat yourself up, he is fine and no harm done. You made a decision based on his symptoms at the time which had improved since you first posted. I'd have done the same. Glad he is ok for now and hope the ABs work their magic.

Thanks BigArea, really nice to hear kind words, the lack of sleep had made me feel a bit fragile!
