Movicol

Hello,

Just started my almost 3yo on movicol, one sachet per day and was just wondering if anybody else has experience of this and can tell me what to expect!?

Didn't think of asking the doctor how soon to expect results (though I should imagine it varies greatly!) Is it safe to send her to nursery tomorrow, i wonder, or will there be a poosplosion or will she get diarrhoea first or will it go straight to nice soft poos like the doctor told me but I'm not sure i believe him, but really hope so nonetheless!

Confused

Many thanks Flowers

I gave it to my dd (7) last week and two hours later she wet herself. She has never ever wet herself before so I don't think it was a coincidence.

Movicol can't cause you to wet yourself, it sits in the bowel drawing water in to soften poo, it isn't absorbed by the body and there's nothing in it that would make you wet yourself. Being constipated can make you wet yourself, stops you from fully emptying the bladder when there is a big lump of poo in the way so can make the bladder quite irritable.
One sachet a day probably won't cause lots of diarrhoea. If she is just a bit bunged up then one sachet a day should lead to soft poos. If she has got a great big rock of hard poo and is getting overflow (leaky soft poo from further up coming out past the hard poo) then that may get worse before it gets better as the movicol will hit the soft poo that's further up first before it breaks down the hard poo so you will get loose watery poo, then poo with lumps then soft poo. You would usually need a slightly higher dose of movicol for this though, I would expect 1 sachet a day in someone who is not impacted to give soft poos in a couple of days time.

Thank you both for replying.

Sally - I very much like the sound of what you've said, doesn't sound too bad! Doctor just felt her tummy and said he could feel lots inside but she has no soft leaky poo, phew!

Savoy - that's really odd (whilst I've taken on board what Sally said) my DC also wet herself too in a similar timescale Confused
