Not been for 2 days but been on and off toilet all day straining to pass something. Just passed some liquids poo but think there is a big lump impacted In there. ( sorry if tmi).

Can you buy remedies over the counter for this? Or will Inhave to go to ooh doc tomorrow to get anything?

Thankyou.

The ooh doctor might give her a suppository or some movicol to soften it up so it comes out. Have you tried lots of fluid and fruit like dried apricots, grapes, oranges? And a run round the park to get everything moving?

Lagoonablue · 02/11/2013 19:50

Thanks for reply. He won't eat fruit or much veg or drink much water! That is the problem. I am slowly working on it......he has lots of exercise though.

Is Movicol available over the counter do you know?

I don't think so. My Ds who is nearly 2 has it on prescription along with some other laxatives as he has had chronic constipation since birth. If you do get Movicol it tastes vile in water or juice, we put it into milk and then it can't be tasted. Suppositories work well but are tricky to get in, if the gp suggests one, ask if they can put it in. I know you said he hates it, but he needs lots of fluid. Would he have an ice lolly? A sneaky way of getting more fluid in?

my DD had this on and off at this age

Lactulose was VERY effective and got her over the fear of going which is what happened

Lactulose can be bought from a pharmacy and the pharmacy can advise on how best to use it short term

Lagoonablue · 02/11/2013 19:57

Cheers everyone. Will try the pharmacy first and the ooh doc if necessary.

Poor little mite. He is so uncomfortable.

Hope he goes soon. A warm bath might be soothing and can also sometimes help them to go?

Pistillate · 02/11/2013 20:18

If he is not eating fruit and veg or drinking much as an ongoing issue, I would seek medical advice. Movicol is really good in these situations, but you need to get some specific advice. You might find the doctor insisting he drink more etc has more weight too.

We find a glass of Orange juice with breakfast works well with our 2, even though they don't like oranges. Lactulose also works but I don't want to be using it all the time x

kd73 · 02/11/2013 20:26

Pistillate, we sought medical advice as ds 1 is a very picky eater, although he had previously been an excellent eater, our gp spoke to our son about the Greeks being very big and strong referring to Jason and the arganouts suggesting we took him for a Greek mess. Ds is 4!!!!!!!!

Lagoonablue · 02/11/2013 20:54

Well he eats some veg! Usually hidden in sauces and has mashed potato. Plus loves satsumas so he has had 3 today! Hoping that gets him going! Likes apple juice which can help constipation too I think so not quite as bad as it looks at first.

Wish he would drink more water though. Guzzles milk like no tomorrow though!

If No movement in the morning will try the chemist first then the docs. Thanks so much for the advice everyone.

movicol was a godsend to help my dd 3 finally go. she was also chronic impacted and hardly drank. u can get chocolate flavour if ur doc is nice (think it cost more) and my pharmacy had to order it in (only took a day) though it will make a mess when they finally go Sad it adds so much water to the stools so they can pass the lump. so in the end my dd decided to take the lactulose as it only softens stools and she didnt like getting so messy with the movicol. a good tip is ice pops. she goes thru lots and I know she is then having fluids. and she also has one wen taking her lactulose as its a rather sweet taste. hope this helps x

Lagoonablue · 03/11/2013 11:36

Thanks. He had a bit of a small poo this morning after I fed him 2 satsumas. I will try the pharmacy and of no joy make a GP appointment. I recall lactulose working for me once!
