What would you do if this was your child?

I'm not sure what to do about my 17 month old.

She had starting on monday what I just thought was a cold. Snotty nose, cough and bit grumpy. Over past 2 days her temperature has stayed around 39 coming down to about 38.1-3 with calpol. She's off her food not even touching her favourite of cheese sandwich offered to her earlier. Only taking a few sips of water when I physically put her drinks bottle thing to her lips.

She's very tired and sleepy which I know is pretty normal for poorly little ones but is barely managing to be awake for more than about 2 hours before crashing out.

Do I just put it down to a horrid cold or should I bother the doctors tomorrow morning? I'm one of these people that only goes to the doctors when it death appears imminent and hate wasting their time. Obviously I'm doing as many home remedies as possible, calpol, snuffle babe rub, letting her sleep whenever she needs to etc...

If it was your toddler what would you be doing?

I would do gp tomorrow. That's a few days to have a temp.

RandomMess · 31/10/2013 18:51

I would take her to the drs she is sleeping an awful not and presumably not taking enough fluids in?

bundaberg · 31/10/2013 18:52

i would take her to a walk-in centre. that's a pretty high temp to be running for so long

Bonsoir · 31/10/2013 18:52

I would definitely consult a doctor.

Sirzy · 31/10/2013 18:53

I would be worried about the lack of fluid - is she having lots of wet nappies?

I am normally a "sit it out" type person but I would be going to get Checked after having a temp for so long.

mumofthemonsters808 · 31/10/2013 18:55

I'd ring my GP but probably would not be able to get an appointment so I'd go to the drop in centre. Even if it is only a virus at least you will have peace of mind. It's not like you have rushed there immediately, you have given her a few days to recover but she is still poorly. I'd definitely get her checked out.

KatieScarlett2833 · 31/10/2013 18:57

I'd call NHS 24

IShallCallYouSquishy · 31/10/2013 19:00

Our doctors surgery are pretty good and usually have some on the day appointments available and will quite often make a space for little ones. I walked in there once when she was having an allergic reaction (scared mum swollen blotchy baby!) and got seen in minutes.

I'll give them a ring in the morning and get her seen. I thought I probably would but didn't want to be over reacting! I'll prepare myself for the constant engaged tone at 8:30 am Confused

I would do something tonight.

PennySillin · 31/10/2013 20:38

Aw poor little thing. I would think making a same day appointment tomorrow just to get checked over and make sure she hasn't got a bacterial infection going on would be sensible. It's likely to be a virus but still sensible to get her checked. Get her to drink little and often, sips is fine but keep offering them to her. Don't worry too much about food. Are her nappies wet? Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Hope she gets better soon.

BabsAndTheRu · 31/10/2013 20:44

Call nhs 24 tonight. The dehydration will be making her sleepy, you need to get her seen.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 31/10/2013 20:57

I'm not sure it is warranting doing something tonight if I'm honest. She actually had a reasonable drink of water when she woke up not long ago.

There's no question that I'll be getting her to gp tomorrow though.

It's horrible when littlies are poorly, they can't tell you what's wrong and it breaks your heart Sad

How's your wee girl getting on today, hope she's feeling better?

rabzz · 02/11/2013 21:21

hello.. how is your little angel feeling now? i hope she is alright and back to her normal self :)

girliefriend · 02/11/2013 21:25

I hate going to the gp for anything to do with me but for my dd I don't care if I waste their time Grin I would rather be wasting time than my dd being ill and not doing anything.

Hope she is feeling better now.
