12 year old with severe gastritis and multiple gastric ulcers, anyone with any experience?

My daughter started with severe abdominal pain in July and was admitted to hospital, they did no tests and eventually I went to see a private doctor with her. He suspected Gastritis and prescribed her the triple therapy for H Pylori, which worked and within 4 days I had my daughter back (she had been in pain and eating very little for 3 weeks)!

At the end of August her symptoms started again, mildly at first and by mid September she was in severe pain again and not eating. We went to a Paed gastro consultant on the NHS and he suspected peptic ulcer syndrome (it was the same doctor that we had paid privately to see). She was scheduled for a Endoscopy on the 1st November! She returned to school for only 7 days of the new school new year, and was in extreme pain and unable to walk or move anywhere. I took her to A&E at the beginning of October and she was admitted to hospital to have an emergency endoscopy which was done on the 7th October. The endoscopy showed severe chronic gastritis and multiple ulcers in her stomach. We were so relieved to have found the cause and that those magic anti biotics would once again make her well!

Unfortunately they didnt do the job this time, and we are nearly another 4 weeks on and she is still in severe constant pain. She was very upset with me, as I kept saying "you will feel better in a couple of days once the anti biotics kick in". It was heart breaking! She gets most pain, when she is moving or in a car, the slightest bump is agony for her. It wakes her at night and she groans if she is moving in her sleep. She has an MRI this week which was normal.

Does anyone have any experience of recurring peptic ulcers?

Thanks

did she get tested for coeliac as well?

did they refer her to community dietician for advice?

sounds horrible for her

Castlecellar · 01/11/2013 10:38

Yes she was tested for coeliac. She has been referred to great ormond street to the gastro specialists. I'm not sure how long we will have to wait for that appointment. It is awful watching her in pain :(

Did they test for coeliac disease via a biopsy from the endoscopy? I had very similar symptoms before diagnosis.

Castlecellar · 02/11/2013 18:39

I am not sure if they did through the biopsy, last time we saw the consultant he said he was still waiting on some test results. The only one he did have was the result for the h pylori which was negative. We have a follow up appointment on the 27th November, I can't believe we have to wait for so long with the poor girl in so much pain.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter :( It seems incredible that she's having to wait so long for a follow up appt!! Could it be worth phoning the Dr's secretary daily to see if they've had any cancellations? They'll probably get fed up with you, but who cares. What about phoning your GP to ask them for support getting a quicker appt? Your MP?

My 6 yr old son has had issues since he was a baby. They diagnosed severe silent reflux at a few wks old, but none of the meds touched it. In the end we slept him on a wedge cushion which helped a lot. He's had prolapse for about 4 years which they've been investigating (they initially thought he was a 2 yr old with piles!), & more recently blood in his stools. They just did a colonscopy (to rule on Crohn's, polyps or lesions), endoscopy & PH test (probe through nose for 24 hrs). His colon's fine, but he has lots of ulcers in his stomach. We think he could have been suffering with them since he was a baby :( The consultant did a biopsy to see if it's a bacterial (H Pylori) or viral infection, or something else. We will get the results in about a week (if it's bacterial I can let you know which ABs he prescribes?).

I'm no expert at all, but should they also be looking at her bowel witha colonoscopy?

The consultant prescribed him Omeprazole to soothe his tummy (he started today). Did your daughter's Dr prescribe her with this? Did he do a PH test (I can find out the medical name if you like?). I wonder if it's worth her trying to sleep at an angle (I'm about to start looking for wedges for my son to sleep on)? I'm waiting for our naturopath to email me a document witha list of foods he should & shouldn't be eating (I think it might be an alkaline diet). If you'd like me to send this to you send me your email address. Let me know if you want me to keep you updated with our son in case it can in any way help your daughter.

I really hope you get this sorted soon.
