Recurring Pulled elbow, babysitters/nursemaids elbow

My DD has had a pulled elbow 8 times in the last 18 months.

We go to A&E each time to get her elbow re set.

I am constantly told this is just one of those things and she will grow out if it, I'm starting to worry as it's happening more and more often, and can happen for example just playing at the park with no obvious major fall or accident.

Does anyone have any experience?

My ds2 has this, it is very common but I would worry it is happening so often.

Have you seen your go,'may be worth a referral to see a paed in case she has hypermobility which makes this more common.

It gemrally is soemthign that stops as they get older and muscles stronger etc.

Ds1 not ds2.

DD4 has this, pulled twice in less than a year but they said as she gets older the ligaments will be stronger. Already she is noticeably rougher on it now that she is at school with no accidents yet She is 5 now and last pulled it around 3.

My brothers and I all had this problem as children but grew out of it by about 7 or 8. I remember it really hurting though.

Thanks everyone for your replies Sad at remembering it hurting I've been trying to convince myself it doesn't hurt her unless she moves it IYSWIM will be extra vigilant with the Calpol next time it happens.

Am going to push for a referral.

It does hurt yes :( poor ds1 was in pain for days one time as they couldn't get his elbow back in place! It took three days and numerous attempts at hospital and they wouldn't give him any pain relief! My mum is a nurse and was furious as she said they should have sedated him once it was obvious it wasn't going to go back in easily.

Oh god 5mad it is horrible when they can't get it back in Confused have had varying amounts of success with different Docs/Nurses.

The best ones seem to have to use no force and more just bend the elbow and press a little.

Sometimes they X-Ray her which again is horrible as she has to put her arm up high which makes her scream in pain, which is heart wrenching as I have to hold her in place for the xray to be taken Confused god typing this I really need to get a referral.

Yes some drs/nurses are very good and can do it easily and have good bedside manner with children, some do not.

Do get a referral as that is a lot of times for it t be popping out. They may be able to do physio to help stremghten the joint?

Will do - thanks for your replies.

This definitely needs looking at more closely.

My dd has this numerous times. She's 4 now and pulled it first when she was 2... Big brother tried pulling her up from a strop in a shoe shop by the arm! The last time it happened was in April just before she was 4. I have push for a referral especially when it happened 2-3 times in 4 weeks. They kept telling me how common it is and she honestly will grow out of it. The last time she rolled off the sofa and did it... She landed on her feet!!!! It's bizarre and I am reluctant to say she's grown out of it yet as each time I say that it happens again. They have taught us to put it back in ourselves but tbh not sure I could with a screaming dd!!! You have my sympathy but like others have said its supposed to be common.

PepeLePew · 30/10/2013 22:46

Think it happened to dd 4 or 5 times, the last time when she was about 4. She's now 9, and spent all day cartwheeling and hanging off the monkey bars so definitely no lasting damage. It's horrible, though they do grow out of it.
