I know it's the 'time' for viruses among little ones but DS has been unwell since Thursday with a cough and a high temp. Friday DH took him to Drs who said he had no infections, just a virus. Saturday we had to take him to walk in who said Tonsillitis and gave us anti'b's. He spent all of Sunday lethargic and 39.5 hot. Has been dossed up on maximum Calpol and Neurofen allowance but still running a 39.5 temp.

It's now 4am Monday morning and I'm holding him in his room as he's completely congested, can't breath through his nose at all so can't breath when he lies down. I'm worried about how much effort he's having to put in to breath. He's been guzzling water but drank too quickly and threw up a little whiles ago. Am going to get him another appt when the lines open at 8am. Hope this passes as quickly as it started. Hmm

Go turn on the shower/bath to hot, and go sit with him in the bathroom. The steam will loosen the congestion and ease his breathing.

Hope he's better soon.

Could you take him to a and e? That is a very high temp given you have given him calpol. And if he is struggling to breathe too? Hope he is better soon.

Potol · 28/10/2013 05:07

If this is any consolation DS when he has tonsilitis a few months ago got much worse on Day 3/4 despite the ABs before getting better. I then had the same thing- went on ABs immediately but even I was really ill on Days2/3 before taking a turn for the better. I suspect that the ABs take a while to kick in.

Antibiotics can take 48 hours to take effect. However I would expect his temp to at least temporarily drop when given calpol and nurofen. It may be worth taking to NHS direct.

drinkyourmilk · 28/10/2013 05:10

Talking. Not taking.

minibmw2010 · 28/10/2013 05:54

NHS Direct no longer serve our area (North Essex), but luckily we have a v good Dr surgery, walk in centre and A&E so I have options for him. He's asleep finally after a lot of thrashing around, a bit cooler despite throwing up most of the Calpol but struggling so badly with the congestion. I'll do the steam thing when he's woken up, thanks.

If he sucking in his chest as he breathes or looking very pale with slightly blue lips then get to a and e ASAP. The temp not coming down would worry me too. It's really hard when it's your own child and you're tired but try and trust your instincts as to whether it can wait til 8.

Aldwick · 28/10/2013 05:59

Do you have any Vicks you could put on his chest and the soles of his feet?

minibmw2010 · 28/10/2013 06:13

Yes we did the Vicks earlier and I think it helped him initially get to sleep. Did some more when he woke at 4. I've kept a close eye on his chest and though he sounds like he's struggling it doesn't seem to be so bad. As he's asleep and I'm wide awake I'm just listening to him so if anything changes or gets worse we'll be off to A&E straight away. Thank you.

How are your poorly boy and his tired mother doing?

minibmw2010 · 28/10/2013 13:40

Hello, thanks all for your help earlier. Had him seen again as he woke with a 39 temp. His tonsillitis is now also a chest infection,Dr said the anti'b's that we're already on should deal with it and if he's still unwell on Thurs to bring him back. He was quite a bit perkier after Calpol this morning but then crashed for a 1.5 hr sleep with a temp. Praying he can clear some of the congestion today and we can all get some sleep tonight !!!

I'm glad it's not as bad as it could be. However someone else can give you a few hours sleep today as you are probably in for another long night.

minibmw2010 · 28/10/2013 16:06

Yes he's still v congested. I'm planning to eat dinner and basically get to bed straight away so I've got a chance of some sleep! Smile

Poor little thing - hope the antibiotics kick in soon. Good luck tonight!

LoveSewingBee · 28/10/2013 20:47

Saline spray help with thecongestion, GP could prescribe Otrivin for him, which would help to clearcongestion much quicker.

Which antibiotics does he get?

You can check his oxygen intake through the finger nail bedbed test. You push firmly with your thumb on one of his finger nails and push your thumb firmly over his nail away from his finger/hand. The nail should become white and once you've let go, it should be pink again within 2 seconds. If not, seek medical advice as it could indicate he is not getting enough oxygen.

You may also want to check breathing range for his age, so you can check it stays within this range.

Hopefully, he is better soon.
