DD 12 fainted and went yellow at school

DD fainted and went a horrible colour at school.
Should I take the day off tomorrow to take her to GPs?
Not sure if this is serious, she's not quite herself today.
She is 12

err yes obv!!

I would have taken her today tbh.

noddyholder · 22/10/2013 21:16

Yes take her. How is she not herself?

Jellykat · 22/10/2013 21:21

Yellowing implies possible problems with liver, best to take her to get it checked out.

TeamSouthfields · 22/10/2013 21:26

U should of went Today!

BeaWheesht · 22/10/2013 21:27

I'd have her at a&e now

FrameyMcFrame · 22/10/2013 21:36

Ok, she's sitting with me watching t.b at the moment.
After the fainting thing she went on to complete the school day, P.E etc.
I didn't find out until she came home so it didn't seem urgent.
Not herself I mean, tired and emotional this evening.
But there doesn't seem to be a medical emergency.

By Yellow do you mean pale or actually yellow?

Not being daft but pale and fainting in teenage girl going through pubety wouldn't send me running to docs.

Yellow = liver to me

MrsExcited · 22/10/2013 21:39

Has she started her periods?

If not get some bits together for her cos i bet she will soon.

FrameyMcFrame · 22/10/2013 21:39

Well apparently she went yellow... According to her friends, all I'm going on is what she's told me since coming home.

girliefriend · 22/10/2013 21:40

Who told you about the fainting thing?

Did a teacher see it?

I would be annoyed if my dd fainted at school, went a weird colour and no one rang me about it, I would have wanted to go and get her.

FrameyMcFrame · 22/10/2013 21:42

Yes started them about a year ago.
She was in science, nobody rang me to let me know, I think because she was ok and went to break then PE with no problem.
The science teacher informed her other teachers.

If school didn't contact you to say she had fainted/gone a weird colour/was being sent home etc then I wouldn't have knocked myself out seeking medical opinion today either.

I suspect she's gone pale rather than some transient jaundice tbh. I'd ensure she was well hydrated/eating regularly & hold off on the GP unless the fainting happened again/ she visibly yellowed but wouldn't condemn you if you got her checked out tomorrow for peace of mind.

FrameyMcFrame · 22/10/2013 21:57

Ok, thanks. I'm going to err on the side of caution and take the day off tomorrow to get her checked out.

Were they doing or talking about dissection? Ds informed me quite a few went pale and one kid fainted in his science class yesterday.....

Jellykat · 22/10/2013 22:19

Framey Do you know if she ate or drank something at break after she fainted?

BeaWheesht · 22/10/2013 23:22

Ok going by new info I wouldn't be overly worried then

FrameyMcFrame · 23/10/2013 07:36

Yes she did eat some biscuits and had a drink, why jellycat?

OP posts:
FrameyMcFrame · 23/10/2013 07:37

No they were doing something chemistry related so no dissection!

MoreThanWords · 23/10/2013 07:55

She 'properly' fainted? And school didn't contact you?! I'd be having words with the Head to make sure teachers are all aware if what exactly they are supposed to do in those circumstances. Is there a school nurse?

FrameyMcFrame · 23/10/2013 08:07

I thought that too MorethanWords,
She's saying she doesn't feel herself today so I will take her to GPs, this has never happened to her before so it's not like I can brush it off.

OP posts:
FrameyMcFrame · 23/10/2013 19:27

GP says normal faint, and nothing to worry about so that's good Smile

OP posts:
MoreThanWords · 23/10/2013 19:39

That's reassuring Smile I would still be having strong words with school though.

Jellykat · 23/10/2013 21:03

Keep an eye on her, the reason i asked about whether she ate at break is my DS1 has a thing called Gilberts syndrome.. The symptoms start in the 2nd decade of your life between 10 and 20, basically if they don't eat little and often they can faint/ go dizzy or weak, the same if they overdo things. Which is why i asked about whether she had a snack.
The yellowness ties in too, as Gilberts syndrome is based around the liver not converting old blood cells into Bilirubin at a normal rate. This can make the skin and eyes periodically yellow.

Its not a major problem, and very easily managed, and although hereditary (i don't have it so it must skip people) and more prevalent in males, my niece has just been diagnosed at 25.
Its easily diagnosed too, a blood test which shows high Bilirubin is normal, as it fluctuates, but if the test is repeated @ 2 weeks later and still high, it's a sure sign.

Just thought i'd mention it, just in case your DDs symptoms reoccur, but as i said its a very manageable disorder, so don't panic Smile
