Is there such a thing as lactose free follow on milk?

DD2 (14mo) has had sleep troubles seemingly forever, which we've recently twigged could be diet related.

I took her to the gp today who supports my suspicions, and has advised me to put her on a dairy free diet for a few weeks, and to give her a lactose-free follow-on milk... Is there such a thing?!

All I can find is SMA LF milk, suitable from birth, or various lacto-free or nut/soya milks.

I'm so confused! I can't really afford the SMA, and it feels wrong for her age too. I'm worried about the soya as I've read that intolerance/allergy could develop from soya milk, and as for the lacto-free, well, it's still milk! Leaves me with the nut milk. I don't mind giving her that, but it's not quite what the gp suggested!

WWYD?

Ok, I wouldn't go for follow-on milk. It's pricey, and has extra iron in it which can be constipating.

It's possible she's reacting to lactose, but that is fairly rare in a child of this age, afaik. Cow's milk protein issues are more common - you could maybe just try goat's milk? That's probably not so expensive. Nut milk is also an option. I thought there were some issues with soya milk in general, but as a temporary measure, it might be ok.

The one big nutritional benefit to cow's milk, is that it has significant amounts of calcium in it. So whatever you're replacing her milk with, ensure she's still getting lots of calcium.

Ok, thanks I'll try the goat's milk :)

I'd be slightly concerned that the GP doesn't know the difference between dairy free (presumably thinking she is intolerant to cow's milk protein?) and lactose free.

Very unlikely that she is lactose intolerant - if she was you would have had a very sick baby as formula and breastmilk are both full of lactose.
