8 week vaccinations

Did the 8week vaccinations break anyone else's baby? DD had them on Thursday and she's been different ever since. Crying, refusing to sleep, generally being irritable and not her usual happy, chilled, relaxed self.

Will this pass? DS just slept for 24 hours after his... I certainly don't remember anything like this! I just want her back!

I remember that my DD was a wreck for about 3 days maybe 4. She has reflux and that can be exacerbated apparently but she was in real distress. No temp but high pitched screaming for hours on end and refusal to be held by anyone but me.

It came on 24 hours after the jags and I think went on for 3 days.

bigwellylittlewelly · 19/10/2013 22:09

Yes.
Never have I heard dd2 cry like the day she had them either before or since (now 19weeks). She had them at 3pm, and cried for two hours, completely velcro, then dozed ans cried for another two hours before I dosed her up with calpol whereupon she slept. She also wouldn't feed - was very worrying. I think she then slept much of the next day. She was fine with 12 and 16week though.

DD1 didn't cry that much with 8 and 16 but 12 turned her into crazy baby for about three days.

bigwellylittlewelly · 19/10/2013 22:11

As a measure of how bad dd2 was at her 8 week jabs I had to ring DH and call him home from work to cook the older DD1 her tea - I genuinely couldn't do anything at all. And I've only called DH home from work three times in the almost seven years we've been together!

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 19/10/2013 22:12

Ds had them 3 weeks a go and just wasn't the same for about 3 days then was fine. He is such a placid baby that rarely cries so it was a shock to the system and I was a howling mess for the first day.
He has his 12 week ones on wed, I am really worried about it.

Passmethecrisps · 19/10/2013 22:16

As a little reassurance DD was still very unsettled by he second set but not as bad and it went faster.

3rd lot were completely fine.

JollyScaryGiant · 19/10/2013 23:03

Thank you everyone. Like you, yellow I've been having serious doubts about future doses. Hopefully she'll be back to herself tomorrow and I'll be able to forget about these horrible few days.

DS was very "broken" for the 72hrs it says on the information. Didn't help that I went for an antenatal group meet up the day after and he just screamed solidly ....

However, if it helps any of you, he had the rest on time, and I don't recall them at all.

He is now 17, so that I recall it so vividly suggests it as truely awful.

However he is as normal as any other 17yr old now!

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 20/10/2013 00:33

I can update after wed, as I'm just going to grin and bare it. Ds screamed so loud when he got then, I've never heard him make a noise like that before or since. So I'm going to have to force myself to relax so he doesn't pick up on it when he gets them. DH might be coming with me as I'm having my own issues so might not be able to drive or walk to the doctors on wed. I think he will be worse than me if Ds cries like he did before.
My niece had a bad reaction to her jags so I was terrified anyway, but weighed everything up and decided to go for it

JollyScaryGiant · 20/10/2013 12:25

Good luck on Wednesday. DD still not herself today but a bit better. She's currently having a very long nap in the sling so hopefully that'll help.

Spoke too soon. Day 4 of post-vax howling baby :(

On the up-side, I feel slightly better after a good cry.

Went to OOH last night. They are not concerned - just a reaction to vaccinations. So dosed DD with calpol again. Which didn't help, again.

So we just need to wait it out. I can't see any way she'll be getting her second and third immunisations on schedule.

I really hope we get our baby back :(

JSG

Read your update during one of the many night feeds last night and thought poor baby. Anyway found I was still thinking about you and her this morning so I've come back to say - trust your instinct - you know your baaby bettwr than anyone and reactions although very rare do happen. I'm assuming she also had the rotovirus vac? Thats a new one and GPs need to take all concerns seriously.

I don't know how good your surgery is but ours is ok and amazing with little babies in that they do take you seriously but if your baby still is crying and very unsettled then I'd certainly stay in touch with them and do not let them fob you off. My dd2 had no reaction to 12 and 16 it was just the 8w which was bad.

JollyScaryGiant · 21/10/2013 08:02

Thank you. We didn't have too bad a night. I'm going to see how today goes. If today doesn't go well then we'll head back to the surgery tomorrow.

She did have the rotovirus vax. I do think this adverse reaction needs to be reported. The problem is there's no way for them to tell which one caused it so they'd have to report against all three (5 in 1, pneumococcal and rotovirus).

JSG, I hope your DD is better.
My DD had the same lot of vaccines last Wednesday and although she is not howling (she did for the rest of wednesday), she has not been herself. Her reflux has really flared up, she's not feeding well at all, refusing some feeds altogether and crying when I put her to the breast. She's had very smelly wind and hasn't been sleeping well.
I have a feeling it's the rotavirus vaccine side effects. I really hope it passes and I'm not looking forward to the next lot.

Let us know how your DD is doing.

JollyScaryGiant · 21/10/2013 21:20

I think it's the rotavirus one too. Not sure why.

DD is much better today. Her naps are still all messed up but she's been much happier during awake times. I called the HV today and told her that we're not giving the rest of the vaccinations until after Christmas and she was okay about it.

Hope your DD is feeling better soon too.

bigwellylittlewelly · 21/10/2013 22:52

I have seen quite a few people whose LOs have reflux say it was made worse with the rotovirus vax.

JollyScaryGiant · 22/10/2013 02:32

DD has always brought up wee mouthfuls so probably does technically have reflux. It has never bothered her though, so we didn't seek medical intervention. Maybe the vax made it begin to bother her.

Things seem a lot calmer in the Jolly house. Fingers crossed we are nearly out of this now.

12 week jags this morning, not as many tears and ok so far. I however had horrendous toothache last night so DH had to stay off work to look after Ds while I was at the dentist. Will update later if anything changes. But defiantly not as traumatic as the first ones.

JollyScaryGiant · 23/10/2013 18:41

Good news about DS, yellowsnow :) hope you're feeling better soon.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 23/10/2013 19:53

Thanks, Ds has had big naps but seems his usual happy self, currently lying in his bean bag telling lots of stories. Lol
I'm feeling ok and had a 4 hr sleep at 12. Grin Hope your dd is back to normal now, poor wee things having to go thru so much so small.

jollyscarygiant · 23/01/2014 12:50

Just wanted to post back. DD had her second lot of jabs today - at 22weeks rather than 12 weeks due to her reaction last time.

Will update and let you know how she is later :)
