Feeling like a terrible mother - dcs teeth!

I feel awful! My ds had to have a filling at 5 years old. He eats a really good diet, some sweets but not a lot. He drank only water til he was around 4 when my dad introduced him to juice which was then all he'd drink. He brushes his teeth morning and night and I kind of reckoned I'd rather he be well hydrated than give him water he wouldn't drink.
Since then (he's now 7) he's had two more small fillings. After the last one we have stopped the juice and banned chewy sweets.
My ds2 is 5 and he now needs a filling. I could just cry. I know I need to get a grip and that in the grand scheme of things it's just a small filling, I just feel so rubbish like it's my fault.
Do some kids just have bad teeth? Is there anything else I can do? (We've cut out fruit before bed as that is apparently bad).
Please tell me I'm not the only one with 5 year olds having fillings.

I think some kids are more prone to decay, something to do with a certain bacterium finding its way into mouths? Not a dentist though. I am sure my kids will be in need of fillings....like your DS my Dd actually made herself dehydrated multiple times because she doesn't like water....

Ds1 got his first filling aged 6. The dentist said that chewy sweets and ds1 brushing husband teeth were probably the culprits.

Since I insisted on brushing his teeth for him his oral hygiene has apparently been much better. I'm going to keep brushing for him for the next 6 months. Have also thought about disclosing tablets and those electric toothbrushes with a built in timer to ensure he brushes for long enough.

Ds1 has a few of his adult teeth through now and I'm paranoid about him needing a filling in one of them.

brushing husband teethShock Hmm Confused ?

...brushing his own teeth.

My DS has had a number of fillings - the dentist said it may be related to him being prem. We now use an electric toothbrush, mouthwash, calcium supplements and not rinsing after brushing. (Crossfingers) he hasn't had any more.

Juice is really bad for teeth, obviously sweets too, but also dried fruits (sticky plus lots of sugar). However, giving a piece of cheese after eating something sweet or acidic is actually a very good thing for the teeth. So maybe include a piece of cheese into the lunch box to be eaten after everything else.

Also, don't brush within 15-30 minutes of having eaten as you brush the softened enamel away. Wait minimum of 15 minutes, even better a half hour, and then brush really well with good fluoride toothpaste 1100ppm for six years and older. A good electric toothbrush also helps.

My sister had awful teeth as a child. No sweets fizzy drinks etc... A couple actually rotted away! They said it was a calcium deficiency... Her adult teeth are strong healthy and she has no fillings at 23!
