Badly chapped lips

Ds (3) keeps licking his face and now has really sore chapped lips/chin. It's a bit of a vicious circle now.

I keep putting Vaseline on it but its not working. It's really sore and he really cried when I tried Chapstick so I think that may have stung.

Does anyone have any other suggestions I seem to remember a friend's child being prescribed Aveeno for chapped skin, does anyone know if this sounds right?

Thanks in advance

I went to a health food shop and got a chap stick thingy with no colour/perfume/additives for DD2 (8) but it didn't help much as she's at school so kept losing it and not applying it often enough, however when she did it didn't sting like the others. She has now been diagnosed with Oral Allergy Syndrome, which sounds worse than it is, but basically an allergic reaction to pollen on fruit and veg skins which sets of the cycle of licking and chapping. She's being referred for allergy testing.
We have also been told to cut out mint based toothpastes which has made a bit of a difference.
Aveeno is lovely stuff, DD1 (13) has really sensitive everything and this has been great for shower gels etc. I'd recommend it though its dear.
This of course may be nothing to do with your Ds and his problem, but I had never heard of it, so thought I'd mention it in case you want to ask your GP.
Good luck, hope he gets better soon x

I rub sudocrem into mine.
Probably not a good idea though.

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream works very quickly on chapped skin, it also has other uses eg burns, cuts etc so worth the money

meditrina · 16/10/2013 18:50

8 Hour Cream is essentially Vaseline with a smidgen of other things.

It's really unusual for Vaseline not to work, so I really feel for our predicament. Weleda have some all weather protective creams, or you could try products sold for nappy rash.

Lanisoh boob cream- amazing!

Imsosorryalan · 16/10/2013 18:56

I smear dds lips ( well just under) with savlon at bed time. Always much better the next day

Kamillosan nipple cream! Works for cracked nipples and cracked lips!!

rockybalBOOOOa · 16/10/2013 20:19

I don't find Vaseline moisturising enough, just slippy!! My DS has a habit of licking round his face and lips and I bought him a plain blue Boots own lip balm stick which isn't strong tasting and doesn't stick. Some of the Chapsticks (esp the black one) are a bit strongly flavoured and tingly.

Jojo3973 · 16/10/2013 21:51

I got some cream called conotrane from boots. Did the trick for my ds.

Ohwhatwitcheryisthis · 16/10/2013 22:18

vaseline really doesn't moisturise. There is science behind it but I'm too thick my very ill dm had problems with cracked dry mouth. District nurse recommended Cavillon cream. miracle

Carmex wins in this house.

Go to your chemist and get some eucerin or flexitol is amazing. Put it on at night when asleep.

I second lansinoh nipple cream! It's fab for chapped skin.

racmun · 18/10/2013 07:36

Thank you everyone I already had some Lasinoh - wow what an amazing difference in just one day!

Thanks again

Burt's bees lip salve, or the Body Shop vitamin E one are both fab, non- stingy and quickly effective.
