Bright red blood in 2.10yr old's poo today

Hello,
Just looking for a bit of advice really. DS2 is fully toilet trained, eats a normal good diet, no health issues. He's not constipated and hasn't been straining to poo. However, his stools have been bright red with blood both times that he has poo'ed today.
He says that he's fine, no sore tummy, no sore bum, nothing.
I've kept a sample (what a treat!) and was planning to take him to the GP tomorrow before nursery.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Also, my DF was diagnosed with coeliacs disease a few years ago and as DS2 has always been slight and slim, I'm now wondering whether he might have it too.

Sorry for obvious question but are you quite sure it was blood? I ask because twice I've thought I've seen blood in DS's poo and twice have realised it was undigested red food (tomatoes). Just had to check.

If you've got samples that's great though, the docs can check it out. Smile

Is there much?

Bimblepops · 13/10/2013 18:27

Sorry, forgot to put that in my OP. No strawberry jam for three days and no tomatoes since yesterday mid-morning. Has tomatoes regularly in his diet, but I've never seen his poo like this.

Definitely blood, as he (TMI) kindly smeared some over his knees before I could wipe and the dried-on colour was absolutely blood, IYKWIM.

Not a gush or anything and I couldn't make out any clots or anything, but there was more than just a smear, enough to make the whole poo red. Seemed to be fairly mixed in throughout the poo, though I didn't exactly dissect it!

Probably a tiny anal fissure just inside his anus.

Very common and should heal on its own, maybe a quick trip to gp to check.

My son had this and dr said that he probably had a fissure( little tear) up his botty. Fresh blood is normally not too much to worry about as it suggests it has come from somewhere close to his bottom not further up.

I'd take him to the drs anyway to check him over, but I'm sure he'll be grand.

Cross post!

Thank you, Hairy and 5MadThings. Not too worried, as he is totally fine in himself, just good to know what the likely cause is.

Ds2 had the same - blood in his nappys. I freaked out and took him to a&e and it just was a little polyp that burst. They said fresh 'red' blood is not a bad sign at all.
