How much movicol has the dr said to give? To clear an impaction my 7yr old ds had to go up to 9 sachets before it cleared.

He didn't say.said to "up the dose till a clear out".he's not sure there even is an impaction, its a just in case measure.DD is 5.5.is there any side effect on giving this much medicine?I want to stop her soiling but I'm worried about high doses

I wouldn't worry too much. As i understand from this book movicol isn't absorbed, it goes straight through, as it were Smile

Constipation, Withholding and Your Child: A Family Guide to Soiling and Wetting by Anthony Cohn (sorry couldn't get the ipad to do an amazon link).

Best of luck with it. My daughter's been on the stuff 2 sachets a day for years now. As the GP said to me "she's a movicol baby".

Clear out is just when you are satisfied that she is back to normal with no bloating or firm tummy and feeling happier. My ds started on 4 sachets a day at 6 mths old and still takes 2 sachets a day at 23mths old, never had any adverse effects from movicol. If your dd has already started pooing then its a good sign the impaction is starting to clear.

fedupofpoo · 11/10/2013 20:50

she is always being pooping, but always small bits.dr not sure she is impacted but we gave it a go to make sure.so if she was good on 3 sachet i can keep it that way?dont need to ways for a big explosion/diahrrea?

Sorry if tmi but the community nurse who saw my ds said that when an impaction clears it's usually dark in colour and smelly because it's been in the bowel for a while.

Movicol is very safe according to everyone I've spoken to. The consultant paediatrician suggested 12 sachets a day as a maximum to work towards for ds.

PedlarsSpanner · 11/10/2013 21:43

we used to wait til explosive motion had occurred

yes, this took up to I think 10 sachets then stepped down gradually, two sachets for many months then stepped down again

this is long term meds, to help the bowel to move whilst returning gradually to non-distended size, I know it seems horrid to have a child on meds but the alternative misery is just grim for all

small bits of poop would indicate to me (parent, with experience, not a medic) that she was constipated and prob impacted too, esp if there was lots of skiddy pants/soiling

PedlarsSpanner · 11/10/2013 21:44

10 sachets per day I mean

pudseypie · 11/10/2013 21:53

Yes agree with monstersballs the paediatricians always told us the darker the poo the older it is. Once it gets a bit lighter it the newer stuff.
