Being a laydee, I'm not sure what's normal here. My 10 year old son can retract his foreskin to clean underneath and has been able to do so since he was very small, actually pretty much from birth. My eight year old still can't. It's very tight at the end and he can't retract it at all, so it gets a bit sore sometimes as he can't clean it easily.

DH was circumcised at a very young age because of a medical 'problem', but he can't remember what the problem was - and he's too embarrased to ask his Mum.

What's normal here guys?? Should I be doing something about this, or is he still too young at 8, to worry about it?

My 8 yo still can't retract his foreskin. The advice I have had is to leave it as long as he has no problem weeing or repeat infections.
My older ds was circumcised, because he struggled to wee.

He wees fine, and he hasn't had any infections, although it was a bit sore once or twice. I wouldn't say it was infected though, just a bit sore. Not too red or inflamed at all, and it got better quite fast.

Circumcision sounds a bit drastic if it's something that will resolve itself in time. (Plus his brother would NEVER let him forget it!)

Anyone else got any experience.?

My ds similar, he's 7. As he doesn't get infections, the GP told us not to worry. When in the bath or shower he stretches it ( as advised by GP) and it's beginning to loosen. If it's still the same next summer I think I'll go back to go just to get further advice. I would suggest you do the same.

Jesus. Just saying how I got over some crushing embarrassment at school MN. Just saying that being circumcised because of this precise issue was what happened to me and I have never regretted it .. apart from needing a 'funny' excuse at hand to deflect crap jew jokes etc.

I was younger than your ds so that's why I suggest going to doc. I suspect the issue with your dh was similar. Lets not be frightened of either outcome eh?

DS1 is the same - foreskin doesn't retract but it doesn't cause any problems. Some doctors will start recommending action quite soon but the ones who seem to know a bit more think you should just leave it if it isn't causing problems and it will resolve itself. I think puberty helps a bit. From all the info I read there is still a decent percentage of boys with non-retracting foreskins at 15 and most of them have resolved by 17 or 18. HTH.

My DS is also 10 and has had problems on and off for years. He has had urine infections in the past and also his willy balloons up at times.

We saw a consultant about 5 years ago and they said to wait and see what happens.

Just recently he's been in lots of pain whilst having a wee, I was concerned as there was also blood in it. I made an appointment with the Drs and said he needs to be circumcised. The Dr thinks he keeps having problems when he has a growth spurt .

He is going to have the procedure this coming Tuesday.
