How many times do children get chicken pox?!

Ds had severe cp at 18mo
Today got call from nursery saying he had it
We explained he didn't and had had it before- the spots he has on back were as a result of falling at nursery and healing last week
5 other children had co so nursery just assumed despite him having marks on fri anyway!! (They'd not noticed)
However I've just googled and seen its possible to have cp more than once- I'm 99% sure it's not but how common is it to arch it twice??!!
Ds is now 2.5
Thanks

My eldest had it 3 times all diagnosed by a dr as I didn't quite believe it! First time he had maybe 30 spots in total, second time it was horrific and third time about 30 again.

Shock Hmm Confused thanks for reply
This timing could NOT be worse
Fingers crossed its not that

I had ot twice as a child. My niece has also had it twice. I don't think it's that uncommon to have it more than once (sorry - probably not what you wanted to hear!)

if the spots are localised in one area then it could be shingles

Lonecatwithkitten · 08/10/2013 17:55

Over 20 strains in 5 subgroups. Not all subgroups protect against other subgroups. If you catch strains in a particular order you get CP up to 5 times.

Argh it is shingles Hmm

I had it 6 times. no immunity.

MatildaWhispers · 09/10/2013 00:09

One of mine has had chicken pox twice.

I didn't even realise children could get shingles, I thought that was just an adult version of CP. Hope he feels better soon.

headlesshorseman · 09/10/2013 00:10

i had it 3 times Hmm covered head to toe each time

my ds had shingles at the age of 3 but was misdiagnosed at first as having eczema as it is unusual in children. He was fine after a few days but still has the scars to show for it.

You can get chicken pox from shingles but only by contact with the fluid from the blisters so if the rash can be covered it is unlikely for chicken pox to be passed on from the shingles rash.

ilovepowerhoop · 09/10/2013 08:32

shingles is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus i.e. you have to have had chicken pox in the past to be able to get shingles. You can get it at any age and it is more common in children if they had chicken pox under the age of 1 (my ds had CP at 6 months and shingles at the age of 3)

wonkylegs · 09/10/2013 08:33

I've had it several times as an child and an adult but I have a screwy immune system and an auto immune disease so I'm not surprised by anything my body does these days.
That said it's still pretty rare to catch it multiple times, rare but not unheard of I'm afraid.

elvisola · 09/10/2013 08:38

My DD just had CP for the second time, first time she was 18 months and it was quite bad, this time she is 3 and it has been horrific.Sad

LoveSewingBee · 09/10/2013 12:01

You can get CP (and I mean CP not shingles) several times and this is reasonably common.

sleepdodger · 11/10/2013 21:51

Thanks all, was defo shingles as dr diagnosed it, also ran along nerve etc
Is rare but he had cp at 16mo so apparently more susceptible Hmm
