My DD 7 has shingles

GP we saw today thinks she has shingles but other than referring to NHS website wasn't much help.

DD started with a rash - 2 inches by 1 inch on right side of her chest last wednesday or thursday. It was slightly raised and red - I put sudocrem on each night and took her to GP today as it wasn't going.

He said not contagious as not blistered and no need to stay off school.

NHS website talks about it blistering quickly then healing - dd's hasn't blistered at all and given we are 6 days in don't think it will blister? Doesn't look like it will blister. Does this sound right.

She is fine in herself.

Sorry to hear about your daughter and I hope she makes a quick recovery. My Dad had shingles many years ago and I don't remember it blistering, it was as you describe slightly raised and red (I think a little bumpy for him). I do know he found it very painful, so it might be worth offering her Calpol/Nurofen.

My dd had shingles at age 4 and she blistered really quickly, had a wee red rash at night then the next more raised blisters all down her back, she was given anti virals and was poorly for about a fortnight, she was also in a lost of pain.

Dd had shingles this spring, aged 5 - there were definite blisters, just like CP but only in a small area. They are contagious, rather than infectious - I.e. you have to actually get the pus from the spots into your own bloodstream to contract CP yourself, so on the whole, low risk.

No swimming though, and it is best to give vulnerable people like pregnant women a bit of a wide berth, but that is really just a precaution.

However as we discovered many people don't understand the difference between shingles and CP and think the same rules of infection apply, so either steel yourself for lots of explaining - or just accept that you will have to quarantine her for a bit.

My 6 yo has just had shingles. Didn't have to keep her in.
