Diarrhoea - not getting better

So dc who is just over a year has had diarrhoea for a week. Not sure what is causing it, he is totally fine otherwise, no fever or pain etc. It seemed to get better for a day or two and re-started since this morning :( I think the milky cereal may have triggered it as I cut out all milk for a few days.

Doctor prescribed him some rehydration sachets (and bum cream for nappy rash caused by diarrhoea) which I have been offering in place of his normal milk bottle 3x a day. But he does not really seem to like them. I am not sure what to do! It shouldnt be going on this long surely?

He did his normal poo early morning 7ish which is normal for him. Since then its been 10am, 1pm, 3pm, and he has just done another one :( poor baby. I will be ringing surgery again on Monday if I can bloody get through but any advice?

is he taking any fluid or food in? How is he in himself? If he's not taking much in I would take him to ooh docs tomorrow to get checked over in case of dehydration. My ds was ill once and got dehydrated from repeated puking.

No he is fine with his appetite and wants everything we eat, but I feel awful not giving him it as the GP instructed no milk/solids just soups and juices. I havent been able to not give him any soilds as the poor mite is hungry, but ensured he isnt eating anything too heavy. He has been happy and playing all day, had his naps, bit clingy this past week. There was 1 day mid-week though when he seemed utterly exhausted so I upped his water intake and snacks.

This evening I ended mixed a bit of ribena in his bottle along with the blackcurramt electrolade. He managed to drink most of the 200ml whilst half asleep. Will try it again tonight in place of his night bottle. I hope he is better tomorrow! They can take ill suddenly at this age which is what worries me. He cannot speak and tell me how he is feeling which does not help!

Hopefully he'll pick up now you've managed to get some rehydration powders into him. If he's got an appetite and is having some juice sounds like he's doing ok but of he still has diarrhoea on Monday I would take him back to doctors as it's been a long time.

Is it just loose stools or total liquid he is passing?

ilovepowerhoop · 05/10/2013 20:51

up to date advice is not to restrict foods so I would give him food if he is hungry. best foods are starchy ones e.g bread, pasta, rice, etc.

ilovepowerhoop · 05/10/2013 20:53

p.s. I would also give him milk if he wants it alongside the rehydration drinks

MrsSpencerReid · 05/10/2013 20:56

I would feed him 'normal' foods, surely if only liquid is going in its going to be mostly liquid coming out?? Maybe leave the milk a bit longer if that seemed to make things worse. Fwiw DS had this for 2-3 weeks when he was about 7m, just stopped one day and went back to normal!! Weird Smile

WahIzzit · 05/10/2013 21:20

Thanks. Yes I've been giving him bread and soup, rice and pasta, that sort of food which he normally eats anyway but without any heavy sauce or chicken etc. Will see how we get on over the weekend, nightmare getting an appointment on a Monday though!
Dancemom His poo has been watery a few times but mostly its just loose. Does cause leaks sometimes even if changed straight away and tired of all the clothes washing You can hear him whilst he's doing it iykwim, explosive type. which he thinks is hilariously Hmm

Well he is asleep now, only managed about 20ml of the electrolade :( will it keep for a few hours or even overnight incase he wakes up and I can offer to him?
MrsSR Thats reassuring. I wasnt worried initially but there must be a reason for the diarrhoea and the hypochondriac in me keeps thinking what if it is a food intolerance or a bug which could linger and become serious. Ridiculous I know!

It is worrying but I guess if he is fine except the poop then it's a good sign! If there was something nasty going on I'm sure you'd have a grumpy child who was not amused by pooing Grin
