How accurate are the ear thermometers? She defiantly has a temperature because she is hot, she seems mostly her usual self and wanted to play outside this aft. She is nineteen months old. Can teething cause a temperature like this, as I think she might be getting her canines. We have striped her off a bit and given her some calpol but she doesn't feel any cooler.

My two love to spike a temperature, i have been told countless times to always look at the whole picture and not just the numbers. So if the child is alert, eating, drinking, playing etc then they are probably ok. Having said that keep a close eye because children can deteriorate fast.

My DDs like to do this from time to time. Sometimes there are causes that show up later.

You can give calprofen (or any child ibuprofen) doses between calpol (paracetamol) doses if you have some to hand and feel you'd like to give it. DD1 seemed to need more to get her temperatures down than DD2 and was also so much more miserable.

Water and rest seems to be the cure for 99% of things IME.

Make sure she's not got too many clothes on and keep her drinking. They do say now to let the temperature do its thing and not give calpol unless they are miserable. If she's in pain with teeth then give it. You can also give ibuprofen.

Thanks. Think it's not teething now, as she had now got a temp of 39.4 we have given her Calpol and she's gone to bed in very light clothing. I've just checked on her and she doesn't feel as hot and she stirred when I touched her so is alert enough. Just waiting to see what it turns into. She didn't want her dinner but has drunk well today and had a big cup of milk at bedtime.
