Hey just wondering if anyones DC’s have caught the HFMD? And if so how long did it take to clear up? My DS looks like he has all the symtoms and rang 111, and the Dr seems to think so too. They’ve just said to give him calpol and to make sure he drinks lots, but just wish there was something else they could give him to clear up the painful ulcers in his mouth Sad

Morning. My DS had it a few months ago. He wasn't unwell with it though. You could try baby bonjela. My son luckily only had one mouth ulcer so I didnt bother. I got it from him and had terrible ulcers for about a week so I feel for your DS and you.

My DS had a dreadful case about 3 years ago. He came down with symptoms in the middle of our move abroad which just added to the misery. In the end, he spent about a week eating and drinking nothing but milk, ice cream and water...comforted by Calpol. Everything else was too abrasive for his mouthsores.

It's a miserable illness--I know since I caught it a week after my son :(

My 18 month old son has it at the moment. It started with a fever on Sunday then he developed spots/rash around mouth on M

-onday. By yesterday morning these had erupted into blisters and he had ulcers on his tongue and spots on his hands and down his legs. He has lost his appetite except for things like yoghurt but advice from GP was same as for you... Plenty of fluids and Calpol/Nurofen for pain or fever. I'm really hoping it passes soon. Good luck to you and yours.

Battenburgcake · 02/10/2013 15:33

Oh, I gave my son ice cream yesterday and I think the cold was soothing on the ulcers.

The disease itself isn't too horrible - its if you get a fever too, that's what makes it miserable. It takes about 3-6 days to work its way through and the spots clear up un about ten days. We didn't find the spots itchy but were tender and 'burny' when they blistered.

It's a horrid thing! If its in the mouth too, try those pastilles from the chemist, avoid salty/vinegaruly/acidic foots too and try to eat things like lollies to cool it down.

Hope the wee fella feels betteer soon. Make sure he (and you all) washes his hands well and uses his own towel.

Thanks everyone battenburg hope your DS feels better soon too. The blisters have cleared up slightly on his tongue now, just a few breaking out on his hands. Not too sure what to put on those? He's very good at taking calpol probably cause it tastes nice! So we've got no problem getting medicine down him which is good, just hope it goes soon. He had an Ice lolly earlier which seemed to help Smile

My ds has just had it prety badly we ended up in hopsital as they were so bad he stopped drinking for days, he was very ill for 4 days, he got taken from nursery at 2pm with one on his hand and one in his mouth, by 9pm he had no space in his mouth without one, the dr said he had around 100! His lips were covered in blisters, 2 were the size of a sugar puff.
We used calpol and nurofen and when we could get fluid in him we used milk via a syringe, we kept him in pj bottoms too as he developed blisters on his bum. They said it was two days for blisters to mature then two days for them to go down again.

Kt1991 · 03/10/2013 20:29

Oh that sounds awful Grotbagstwin hope he is okay now? Thankfully we have managed to keep DS’s fluids up, usually when hes ill he doesn’t like to drink much but I have really made him drink lots this time.

Glad your ds is keeping fluids up, his is fine now. He literally went from quite ill to happy and drinking the next day, took a few days to be back to normal whole sleeping a lot as he didn't sleep much when ill.
