Well if its undescended the surgeons can do an operation to bring it down, only a day case thing so it doesn't take long. It's not always successful and sometimes has to be repeated. They just have a little scar.

How old is your DS, OP?

paperlantern · 26/09/2013 15:03

only 6. I think we are just checking it's there at the moment.

the preparing paperwork is limited, just that he will have the ultrasound goo will need to wear a gown and can wear his own dressing gown (which is a good thing). But he has ASD so would like to prepared him as best I can

I have a 2 1/2yr old who had to have an operation a few months ago because they couldn't find one on the scan. He was still pretty much a baby when they did the scan so very easy to take him along to scans and check ups. It was just like having an ultrasound scan during pregnancy but took a while of looking around.

Hi there

My DS had to have an investigation for an undescended testicle when he was just over one. When they scanned him it was unclear if he had a testicle at all but I actually can't remember the scan - I think he had a scan first, just with a hand held scanner thing like when you're pregnant. I was there for sure. They did an investigatory operation (day operation) during which they found just a 'nubbin' so they removed what was there. Basically he only has one testicle.

Thanks for the replies. I guess in many ways I'm more anxious than he is. ...

it is horrible isn't it :(
But you will be ok honest. Both of you.

The scan is not invasive.

I felt a lot more scared when he had to have the OP and had to send DH down with him when he had the anaesthetic as I couldn't face it.
But it was all ok in the end.

My son had an operation in June for this.

The surgeon said there is 3 different operations depending on what the find when the look.

  1. if the look and the testicle is not there at all, they would just stitch him back up.
  2. the testicle is there and can just be pulled down in to the sack.
  3. the testicle is there but in the wrong place, they would need to connect a blood supply to it and leave it for a few months, so that it could then be pulled in the sack.

Ds had number 3 and has to go back at Christmas for a second operation. His testicle was on the wrong side(outside instead of inside where it should be) they said this is rare.

The surgery was done by keyhole and he was left with three little openings which were glued shut.

if he needs an op the anaesthetic I know i can be ok with because I've had to do that before.
for me I guess I'm more worried about knowing what's going to happen so I can explain it properly to him. also it goes against everything you try to teach in terms of appropriate touching. Sad

As far as I remember they don't really fiddle around much, they are looking for a testicle that isn't in the sac iykwim, so they scan around it.

My DH had this. He was 6 when he had a procedure to release the testicle. He has a very faint scar on his abdomen and one testicle is slightly smaller than the other. There are often concerns about fertility, but we have two DCs.

Good luck, I'm sure he will be fine!

paperlantern · 27/09/2013 08:53

Thanks good to know.
I appreciate all the replies

Same as Silas
Except we have four dcs and dh had the snip as we seem to be so fertile
