Ds with awful bout of eczema...

Ds is suffering with an awful bout of eczema at the moment. It's located to the inside of his arm. It's all weepy and yucky. I've taken him to the doctor and she pescribed him antibiotics & cortisteriod cream.

Now & then the eczema flares up, but I've never seen it so bad. He developed a high temperature also the other night but seems better now.

When it's not so bad, we moisturise his skin daily with e45 or oiluatum and Aveeno on his face.

This recent flare up has got me thinking about what products we are using that may aggravate his eczema. We use Persil non-bio for clothes washing, rarely any fabric conditioner. He has his baths with his sister & they have their hair washed in the bath, usually I use tresemme or simple for the kids. I've never used bubble bath. Has anyone any recommendations for eczema sufferers in terms of shampoos and washing powders?

I think mainly his clothes are all cotton. I guess I am over thinking everything here but his arm looks terrible, like something from a horror film.

Any pointers will be appreciated!

Sorry to hear about your DS. We have eczema too and have tried changing washing powders and conditioners but to be honest it has made no difference. It just seems to come and go and I can't find any reason for it - apart from suncream which defo aggravates it.

It may have something to do with a virus (the high temperature he had)?

The antibiotics should soon help. We also use Aveeno and Oilatum and the steroid cream Dermovate when we get flareups, from experience it is best to treat the flareup when they start itching otherwise it just gets worse and is harder to control.

Hope he's better soon. Eczema's a right pain (also have it myself).

Body shop hemp hand wash as soap in bath and hydro mol moisturiser. Ell on steroid cream for bad flare ups

Sorry - should be elocon steroid cream. Also no oilatum, e45 etc as all contain fragrance/parfum

No shampoo in the bath. Wash hair without getting on skin. Oatmeal in a sock in the bath. Aveeno all over. Anti histamines before bed. Look at triggers (stress, tiredness) and try to anticipate them with extra cream / anti histamine. Sunshine and salt water help - not much use here, I know!

We use Cetraben (or is that Cetreban?!) as an emolient and in the bath to clean, some random baby shampoo for hair.

Have you tried diet changes? Ds is now dairy free and has never been so clear! Didn't seem to make a difference until he started eating loads of yoghurts, then after a 4 month flare up we cut all dairy and it's practically gone!

I know it's not really what you were asking :-/

Oh - and dh finds liquid clothes washing detergents fine but powder really itchy, worth a try if you use powder at the mo?

Or hoover relentlessly...

We are having great success with La Roche Posay products on dds eczema.

We are using Syndet and Lipikar Huile for washing and the Lipikar moisturiser.

DD has very dry skin and eczema and her skin is much improved with the above products.
