Arghh... baby had a little choke on broccoli floret... set us back on the weaning journey. Baby is fine! I think I'm still shocked and to top it off my mil was on the phone to my oh at the time. Seeing her this week and she'll probably make me feel worse. I need a pre prepared answer for when she mentions it. Any ideas?

Was she really choking or just gagging? Was she (the baby) distressed by it?

It was kind of in between, but I wasn't waiting around to find out. I put her over my lap and gave her 2 firm 'slaps' and then she was ok. Very hairy moment. She's fine with rusks, baby biscotti and baby crisps, but I think the floret was a little rubbery???

Babies do a lot of gagging in the early days as they try out solids - their gag reflex is much further forwards than an adults. So as a general rule of thumb, if the baby doesn't look distressed, they are gagging not choking and you don't need to worry (obv still keep a close eye!)

As far as your MIL goes, I'd explain the above and tell her DD was gagging not choking (even if you think it was borderline!)

Chokes even!

The Nct and Red Cross do first aid courses which covers choking. Remember not to give grapes and cheery tomatoes unless cut up or marshmallows. As they get stuck and block off the airway.

If you're doing BLW then babies can gag.

If she's making a noise and coughing then she will probably manage to get rid of it herself, you just need to hover nervously.
Proper choking is rare, gagging is quite common. My 8 month old who hasn't done it in a while did it last night on a ginormous piece of carrot.
