DS (6) complaining of stomach cramps/pains

Looking for some words of wisdom/advice/reassurance please if anyone else has come across this in their 6yo.

DS had the odd episode here and there for the past six months or so, possibly longer. But in the past few weeks it's been more regular, so we took him back to the GP (he was there in April this year too) as we felt it couldn't be ignored. The GP examined him and said she cannot find anything seriously wrong. He isn't constipated because he does massive stools every day or every other days (depends on what he's eaten).

I have been phoned, in the past fortnight, at various stages of the day by school office to collect him as he's 'hysterical' screaming in pain. We were given medication by the GP at the beginning of the week for him, so he's taking that as the GP suspects it could be IBS.

GP has also put in a referral to the paediatrician at the hospital, so we're waiting on this to come through. No idea when this will be.

I spoke to the Head yesterday morning and said I don't think it's right that he's getting sent home as he'll miss out on his education if he is absent every time he has a pain. The pain does subside after 10 minutes or so each time this happens. She agrees, and said they will only phone if it's a real emergency. I live close enough to school that I can pop over within minutes.

No idea what to do. I feel I'm on tenterhooks waiting on the school phoning even though they've said they'll try their best not to. I just hope he's okay, I'm worried sick.

I'd be pushing for that paediatric appointment if I were you. Can you ask your GP how long it could take?

Flats I've decided to take him into casualty department tomorrow morning and get this sorted out. I feel something's just not right. Thanks for responding.

Phoned NHS24 earlier and I've been advised to take him into casualty when he next gets a stomach cramp. Will try and get him in tonight.

DH took him in last night, was seen within the hour by O.O.H. GP service that runs alongside casualty department. They checked his BP, O2 sat levels, and done urinalysis all within normal ranges. Basically, DH was told it's not likely to be anything sinister as DS was well when being examined (he wasn't having a stomach cramp at that time) and so she came to the conclusion that he's got what's referred to as 'tummy' migraines. If only the GP has just said this at the local health centre, we'd be less bloody stressed about the whole thing...

Just glad to have been told what's going on at last. Such a relief to have the mystery solved and know DS is okay. He's to continue with the mebeverine medication that was prescribed earlier this week and the school will just have to come up with a plan to keep him there for six hours each day even if he does have the odd episode still. It isn't serious enough to warrant his being absent from school on a regular basis.

Phew!

Thought it best to post today so that if any other parent has a child with similar symptoms in the future, this may be of help to them.

Oh, and DH asked how long the referral will take to paediatrician and he was told 3 months! Shock
