DD is getting a brace; the NHS will pay - apparently no question her teeth are bad enough

But why? How is it decided? I think her teeth are quite nice

Hi there is an index of treatment need an IOTN which is basically a grading scale which looks at teeth and grades them according to how displaced they are. Usually above 4 or 5 counts as free on nhs. But dentists look at teeth differently so you might not see what they would.

Its good she will have free treatment you could be paying thousands!

Thanks

She has a sort of twisted tooth which we worried about but apparently that wouldn't get treatment - the issue is that her teeth meet (I think) and something to do with the joint of the jaw

We honestly thought we had no chance on the NHS but the lady was definite

You can actually see her 'twisted' tooth on my profile

We are very grateful as we were prepared to pay; DD wants to work in the theatre so it is required to have a 'nice' smile

I was told that DS would need extensive orthodontic work when he still had most of his baby teeth. At the time, I didn't think they looked that bad but 3 years into treatment (and near the end hopefully!) his teeth look amazing. His treatment needed to be done at the hospital rather than the local orthodontists. One of his teeth grew virtually in the roof of his mouth and was removed and successfully implanted in the right place just before Christmas so they're waiting to be sure it's secure before his braces come off.

Your DD is already gorgeous so that will be the icing on the cake Smile

How amazing for your DS (although I hope DD's don't take 3 yrs - gulp)

Thanks

Don't worry, she qualifies, that kind of tooth will wander without treatment.

marriednotdead · 12/09/2013 22:15

It was a year of block braces which realigned his jaw an he had an overbite caused by thumb sucking. We're almost at the end of the second year of fixed 'train tracks', which I think may be off by Christmas. Then there will be retainers so it's not over even then!

KatyMac · 12/09/2013 22:16

Goodness - I thought they looked pretty OK

& now I have to prepare her for 4 teeth out - but they are fitting the brace first, to see which ones must come out Sad

I had 6 out a bit younger than her

Don't worry, she will be absolutely fine.

For the first 48 hours after any brace is fitted, DS has been quite distressed and unable to eat properly, but that stage passes almost overnight. He has quite a low pain threshold too, but has been surprisingly ok. Even with the GA for the transplanted tooth, he came home and ate a normal dinner the same evening!

KatyMac · 12/09/2013 22:27

Thanks - it's me that has the issues I think Blush - she will be fine

My 12 year of had braces fitted today. I was prepared for he worst but he was fine. He says they are uncomfortable and I have given him painkillers, but overall it hasn't been as bad as I thought. Soft food for a couple of days and then he will be used to them.

DIddled · 12/09/2013 22:37

My son had his on 6 months ago- they were considering removal but are going to leave in for a bit longer- his teeth look great now though!!! He is nearly 15 but not bothered by them- I think they are a bit of a status symbol!!!

We were lucky not to pay as cost is upwards of 3k - eek!!! Would have had to find it somehow.

KatyMac · 13/09/2013 07:06

Hope your DS is OK today Wiifitmama

I feel a bit more confident about it all now - Thanks everyone
