Good morning all- my DS2 is 10 weeks old today & is having his first lot of injections + the rota virus drops Confused (my DS1 (3) never had the drops, wasn't around/offered). Can anyone tell me why to expect..will he be grumpy? irritable?
I've been advised to give Calpol before he goes in to help with temp, but I'm anxious what to expect with these drops :(
Thank you for reading
Have a good day

No idea about the drops I'm afraid. My dd was v sleepy, but no temp, after her first jabs. Who had been telling you to give her calpol?Shock You can't prevent a temp by giving a baby calpol!

The HV called a few days ago & she recommended it before I take him today. Should I not? (I haven't done yet)

Don't know about the drops, but I thought you were actually advised to avoid Calpol unless absolutely necessary?

PoppyAmex · 10/09/2013 08:31

This is what I read at the time:

"There has been some research that suggests giving calpol prophylactically can make the vaccinations less effective therefore the advice is to only give calpol if they are unwell following the vaccinations."

I don't remember giving my DS1 calpol for his first injections - he was 8wks. But the things the HV is saying/advising now seems different to that of 3 years ago! Confused

My DD seemed to enjoy the drops. I suspect they are sweet! I do believe they gave her a bit of an upset tummy though and she was rather windy. This happened after both doses (8 & 12 weeks)which leads me to think it was not coincidence.
I didn't give her any calpol as she didn't have a fever. I wasn't advised to give it before hand but doubt I would have done so even if the HV said to.

PoppyAmex · 10/09/2013 09:51

No problem, wifey.

Hope your DS is ok; I was pathetic during DD's shots and suffered more than she did Grin

Miggs28 · 10/09/2013 09:59

my DS had upset tummy & was a lot more windy/sicky after his jabs and I think this was down to the drops. I was advised not to give calpol to him unless he got a temp, which he didn't. I was also advised to wash my hands really carefully after nappy changes as the rotavirus is a live vaccine & there's a chance you might catch it and get poorly yourself.

Hi everyone, thank you so much for your advice!
DS2 did brilliantly & although sleepy seems ok.
I told the nurse administering the drops & vaccines that the HV had recommended using Calpol but admitted I'd asked the 'wise MN ladies' & decided against it & she praised the MN advice at not doing so! :) she said if he gets fretful later then a little calpol is advised but definitely not before. Thanks all again!

Woohoo! Glad DS was ok Smile

wifey6 · 10/09/2013 20:35

Thanks Forgetfulmog! He's very sleepy & has been asleep on/off the last 5+ hours but I'm hoping its better for him to 'sleep it off' than be fretful x

Do be absolutely on top of hand hygiene -I wasn't advised in how long for with first drops (was anally retentive for about a week) second set I asked and she said 72hours.

DD2 was fine with second set but first set she screamed for four hours, gave calpol and posted on MN!
