Take him to the dentist or not?

Ds1 (7) had a nasty crash off his scooter on Friday.

He landed on his face, but was wearing a helmet. His nose has got a mi or graze but his front 2 (adult) teeth went into his top lip. At the time his front 2 teeth felt a bit wobbly. We couldn't see our dentist at the time as they were shut and the emergency dental service wouldn't see him as he's had an accident and didn't just have dental pain, so they said we should go to a&e which we did.

No treatment was needed there. The Dr said we could see the dentist after the weekend, "If you like to reassure you"

DS's top lip is extremely swollen and bruised. Today is the first time that he's let me anywhere near his teeth. I very gently felt them and they feel firm to me, but he says that they feel wobbly to him.

As they feel ok to me and the Drs comments were so wooly I'm not sure that I should try to get him to see our dentist tomorrow, but if anything should happen to his teeth and I'd not got him checked out I'd feel awful.

Tomorrow is my only day off work this week. If he needs an appt then tomorrow would be by far the easiest day to take him.

What would you do?

I'm a receptionistnatna dental practice, and we usually say to parents if the child has had an accident and you are concerned then come in for reassurance. I would do the same if it was my DS regardless to where I work. But I worry a lot! Hope your DS is ok!

Yes do! (Dentist)

He is going to need monitoring, as unfortunately those teeth may go on to 'die' in the future. He needs baseline assessments, xrays, and if the teeth are very loose, possibly splinting.

Receptionist at a that should of been!

Take him.
A dentist will be able to do a full assessment and take X-rays if necessary. Even though they may look ok now root fractures may be present or the nerves may have been damaged. This can lead to future problems.
Hopefully not but most dentists would be quite happy to see even if just to reassure.

Thanks both.

His teeth are not really loose. They may not be loose at all but I didn't want to try too hard as his mouth is still really delicate.

His top 2 front teeth obviously took a lot of the impact which I imagine isn't a good thing for them, so I'll call our surgery in the morning and ask for an appt.

We've been and he's been examined and x-rayed. No damage is apparent at the moment, but he's got an appt in a months time for a follow up assessment.

He's also got mouthwash to use for 2 weeks to keep the bacteria levels down in his mouth while brushing the 2 front ones is so sore.

That's good to hear, fingers crossed all heals well!
