My 11 month old has got a nasty cold and has gone off his food and drink a bit I've taken him to the doctor and he told me to make sure he has as much fluid as possible but he just point blank refuses to drink any tips? I'm really worried he's going to end up dehydrated

Syringe fluid in
Offer watery food such as cucumber

Did your doc tell you what the signs of dehydration are?

Sirzy · 07/09/2013 20:42

If needed syringe it in. Try juices if he won't drink milk/water

BeaWheesht · 07/09/2013 20:44

Try ice lollies, jelly, fruit, squeeze fruit pouches, yogurt.

Also syringe in 15ml every 15 mins if need be.

Watch out for signs of dehydration.

Thanks for the advice everyone don't know why I didn't think of any of this :/ and yeah I'm aware of the signs he's had fewer wet nappies today and yesterday that's why I was worried :/

As long as he is having wet nappies thats good. You never think logically when your worried.

Keep an eye on the inside of his mouth too, make sure thats not getting dry as thats another sign of dehydration.

Saline drops or similar to help clear his nose might help too as he may be struggling to drink with a blocked nose. Perhaps he would sip out of an open cup? (may be messy!)

AlfieAndMomma · 07/09/2013 21:54

He's got saline spray, snuffle babe and calpol :)

I've never really tried an open cup with him but worth a try! (It all comes out in the wash as my mum would say)
Thanks

Definitely try the open cup, DC has always wanted to copy us drinking from a big cup (even a pint glass!) and even if it is squash or fruit juice it doesn't matter at the moment.

Ice cubes and lollies are great.

But if you do get worried, syringe dioralyte into the side of his cheek tiny amounts like 5mls at a time. It trickles down their throat before they get a chance to spit it out, but not enough to make them choke. You generally have to pin them down a bit and listen to hysterical wailing which is horrible, but even a few syringes of dioralyte makes a huge difference to a little baby.
