5 year old screaming with pain in her bottom and vagina

wrenster · 06/09/2013 22:27

My DD has complained of a sore bottom for a few days now and I've just put sudocrem on it. Tonight she is literally screaming with pain she says with pain in both her bottom and vagina.

When I looked at her bottom earlier I thought I saw a wiggly thread in it and on googling I wonder if she has threadworms.

However all sites advise it can be itchy but she is literally screaming in pain. I am worried it is something more now

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Calpol doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Will take her to the docs tomorrow but anything I can do in the meantime?

Thanks

If you think you saw worms, you probably did. You need to get an ovex (or equivalent) into her asap

Do you have a late night chemist or someone who can pick one up for you?

If you do, then she will be fine in the morning

QueenBoudicea · 06/09/2013 22:32

Sounds like worms. Think I remember one of mine having similar symptoms and check under the cover of darkness and it was definitely worms.
Head to the chemist first thing for treatment for the whole family.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 06/09/2013 22:34

The worms sting/ bite to cling on as I understand it.. Get ovex ASAP and then treat all family, change beds etc awful dose

okthen · 06/09/2013 22:35

When dd had worms she would wake up screaming in the night clutching herself. It was very distressing for her indeed and I was sure it was a uti for ages before we realised it was worms. Got some worm medicine prescribed (or you can buy over counter)- one small dose and they were gone. No bother. No more screaming in pain, and in fact her whole mood and behaviour improved. Good luck!

defineme · 06/09/2013 22:38

Yes it can be a symptom of worms op-especially if been there a while. If you saw a littel white wiggly it definately is. ovex and don't be surprised if she needs another dose later. hot wash bedding and towels, sleep in pants and pjs that go straight in wash, washher bum when she gets up too. and cut nails. I anti bac all door handles etc too!
The first time dd had them we all got them too.
They come out at night, so a torch now will confirm it!

defineme · 06/09/2013 22:39

24 hr asda or late night chemist?

littleblackno · 06/09/2013 22:39

My DD was the same when she had worms, it was horrible to see her in so much pain. Get it treated tomorrow - it works really quickly. I gave my dd a cold damp flannel to hold on to the area herself, that seemed to give her some instant relief.

mercibucket · 06/09/2013 22:43

put vaseline on tonight and tomorrow, but get ovex asap

wrenster · 06/09/2013 22:44

Thanks so much ladies. Have dispatched hubby to late night pharmacy for medication for all of us. I presume it won't hurt my 2 DS if they didn't have it?

I'm going to bath her now I think to try and relieve the pain.

I've had another look with a torch and saw another so pretty conclusive but just odd she is in so much pain :-(.

Looks like I have a busy day of cleaning tomorrow!

Do you think I can take her to a bday party tomorrow?

Yes treat everyone unless pregnant, breastfeeding or under 2. So lots of hoovering and damp dusting and hand washing. Give her a shower every night and Wash her bum and under fingernails every morning, tight pants in bed to discourage itching.

Can you tell ds had them recently?

Yes to birthday party just remind her not to scratch herself and to keep her hands clean. Ds was still at school. Obviously if she's in pain tomorrow then that might be a different situation....

Ps ovex is the thing that worked for us

BeaWheesht · 06/09/2013 23:03

Oh and change bedding daily and take care not to waft it around as this distributes worm eggs into the atmosphere.

YoniBottsBumgina · 06/09/2013 23:07

YY to worms. DS was awful the first time he had them. I don't think he was actually in pain, he had just worked himself up into such a frenzy but was absolutely hysterical :( poor thing. I couldn't get to a pharmacy either so he was stuck with them until the next day :(

YoniBottsBumgina · 06/09/2013 23:07

As in, I think he didn't like the sensation and was expressing this as pain even though they don't actually hurt.

wrenster · 07/09/2013 07:01

You have all been so reassuring, thank you. She settled eventually last night so I'm hoping the pill will have worked its magic overnight and she isn't in any pain anymore.

One of my DS has bed wet the past 2 days which is very unlike him. I'd put it down to starting school but now I wonder if he might have them too? Everyone will be done today so hopefully that will cover things and bedding etc is already being washed.

There's never a dull moment being a parent is there?!

DD2 gets severe pain (screaming hysteria) with worms, which she gets frequently due to sucking her hand. I clear any visible worms (horrible job but it's so painful she can't sleep), clean thoroughly then generous sudocrem. Ovex straight away. Job done.

I think it's the mucous that irritates - DD2 has actually had surface weeping of blood in the past from it, even on the first presentation of symptoms.

WeAreSix · 08/09/2013 21:03

Not unusual at all - most vulval pain in children is caused by worms.

My 8yo has had them twice; both times she's been red raw but no itching.

Nasty little feckers! (Worms, not DDs)

Don't forget to repeat the Ovex in 2 weeks - really important if the DCs have got a few visitors.

BlitheringIdiot · 08/09/2013 21:53

It's definitely painful/itchy to an extreme degree. I still remember having them when I was about 2. I am now very old. Poor wee thing...

anywinewilldo · 08/09/2013 22:45

I have two DD. Worms ALWAYS manifest in them with acute vaginal pain and I have to admit to removing them - it's usually just one that's gone astray - carefully, with sterilised tweezers - as the relief is immediate! And Ovex as well of course. Sorry if TMI...

wrenster · 09/09/2013 20:54

It's reassuring to know it's common, thanks so much and sorry your little ones have suffered too.

In terms of ensuring that we don't have a repeat episode we will obviously all have the medication again in 2 weeks and the house has been cleaned from top to bottom and disinfected But how far do we need to go with this?

I am changing her bed and pyjamas every day, showering her in the evening and wiping her with wipes in the morning. All towels in the house are washed everyday. I'm overseeng handwashing when they get up and before meal times but I'm not sure how long I need to carry on with this? DH is very upset and agitated by the whole thing (although none of the rest of us had it just poor DD) and he says that is what we need to do for the next 2 weeks. Have stopped bathing DC together too but this is a nightmare logistically.

Any advice? Thanks again

I think it is pretty hard to avoid completely, but hand washing is the key. Every morning, after using the loo, before eating.

My ds1 is the culprit in our house. He is so forgetful and also chews his fingers.

We've had them 3 times in two years, but at least I know what the signs are now. As soon as he starts to itch, I go straight to the chemist.

PandaG · 09/09/2013 21:08

Is she at school? Tell them, and ask them to replace playdough - eggs can live in it (ergh!) I think that 40% of under 10s have them at any one time, so very common, nothing to be embarrassed about. I've had them at the same time as DD, and I can agree it is very painful indeed. Scrubbing nails before eating important, as is stopping fingernail chewing.

Liz79 · 19/09/2013 21:37

This is helpful. I've just done my first chemist dash for ovex. Will I see.worm corpses.around her bottom in the morning? We will be repeating the treatment in 2 weeks, do we need to change her bedding daily until then? How do I know they've.finally all gone? Do we have to check her.bottom.every night? I'm damp dusting & boil washing bed linen tomorrow. Do I have to.wash.ALL.the toys?

wrenster · 20/09/2013 21:09

Liz79 sorry you're in this position too. In terms Of our experience, I didn't see any dead woms, I did change her bed and pyjamas every day for 1 week, towel changed every day. We also washed all toys, hoovered and damp dusted all rooms. Very strict with hand washing too particularly before breakfast.

We are due our 2 week dose tomorrow and we don't seem to have had a return visit yet!

Hope you get rid of th blighters!

Thank you. DH discovered he has it this morning. Me & DS seem ok. DD was more uncomfortable tonight but I couldn't see any. Will look when we go to bed. I have stripped ours & DDs bed & damp dusted those 2 rooms & all the doors & light switches. Bathroom has had a thorough clean. Front room was damp dusted day before finding the bastards. All of her soft toys have been in the wash today & each towel only gets used for one shower. DD will be having daily shower instead of 2-3/week. Also very strict on the hand hygiene. We usually all have breakfast in bed together. They weren't impressed with going downstairs today.
