possible urinary infection in nappy wearing child

I'm worried dd 2.2yo has a uti. All day when she's had a wee she's expressed discomfort, she was having nappy free time and wee-d on a towel she was sitting on and it smelt offensive and just now she's told me her vagina hurts. What I can see looks very red. I'm going to call the gp in the morning for an appointment but presumably they'll need a urine sample? she is in nappies and refuses to sit on a potty. She's wee-d on the loo once but it was more of an accident, certainly she won't do it on command! How do I get a sample? I don't want to waste anymore time than necessary, if she needs antibiotics then I'd want them to start ASAP but have no idea how to get the sample. Any tips?

No advice on how to collect the urine but I think if you suspect an infection you need to get her seen before the morning. Urine infections can get nasty very quickly.

IsisOhIsis · 05/09/2013 19:17

Oh really? Like, take her to the hospital, you mean?

I agree with Girl. Untreated UTIs can have very serious implications, but they do need a sample to test. Can you give her plenty to drink and then sit her on the potty in front of the TV to get a sample?

DD was hospitalised twice as a result of urine infections.

If you spk to the gp they have urine sample packs for children in nappies, it's quite difficult to get a decent sample as theirs a high chance the sample will be contaminated due to the sample coming from a nappy.
I went through the same with my dd(2) and sent in about 5 samples before an infection was confirmed. They'll probably organise for her to go for a scan if an infection is confirmed but they'll wait 3-6 months after infection so the inflammation goes down so they can be sure there's no internal problem causing the infection. They apparently do this for all girls with uti's now.
Hope your dd is better soon, nothing worse than your kids being poorly.

Yes I would ring out of hours. In the mean time leave the nappy off and try get get to drink some water mixed with a little bicarbonate of soda if possible. Other than that just plain water and milk and maybe calpol for pain relief.

IsisOhIsis · 05/09/2013 19:22

I've given her calpol and she's asleep in bed now. I had no idea UTIs could be so serious in children :( I will call out of hours, thank you all

Has she got a temperature Isis?

Bunbaker · 05/09/2013 19:26

Untreated UTIs can cause permanent kidney damage later in life. Our GP takes them very seriously. After DD's second infection they sent her to hospital for a scan on her kidneys to check for damage.

Totesamazeballs · 05/09/2013 19:28

It's not ideal but I put sterile cotton wool in the nappy and collected the wee from that by squeezing it out!

IsisOhIsis · 05/09/2013 19:44

No temp. I've put a cloth in her nappy to gather urine, though obviously it's not sterile so I'm not sure how good that will be. I've called the 111 service and they said I'll get a call back, so I'm just waiting for that. Feel awful, I honestly had no idea it could be that serious.

Sorry, I was doing bathtime. Sounds like you're doing the right things. And don't worry - if she's not got a fever chances are it's mild for now.

IsisOhIsis · 05/09/2013 19:58

\\i've got an appointment at 10pm with the OOH gp so will have to drag poor DD out of bed. Thanks for your help, everyone

You do need a urine sample though or your appointment will be a waste of time.

Icantstopeatinglol · 05/09/2013 20:08

isis you're doing the right thing getting her checked out. I wouldn't worry too much if she doesn't have a temperature but if they suspect she has a uti they might give her antibiotics then refer her for a scan.
Hope she's ok bless her.

Icantstopeatinglol · 05/09/2013 20:10

They should have the sample packs when you go for your appointment so you'll just have to wait around for your dd to wee then they'll check the sample there and then. They did that when I took my dd to a walk in centre then gave her antibiotics.

ipswichwitch · 05/09/2013 20:17

They'll give you a pad to put in her nappy, then encourage her to drink plenty and you syringe the urine out of the pad. Don't use sudocrem and try and get a poo-free sample or its contaminated and no good for testing. If a uti is confirmed, she should be put on trimethoprim (or other antibiotic) and may well be sent for a couple of scans to check for kidney scarring.
Kidney damage is thankfully not that common, and tends to be something they keep an eye on in terms of checking blood pressure every so often, and checking for uti's

Totesamazeballs · 05/09/2013 22:29

Sterile is ideal but I went into the doctor with one sample squeezed out from cotton wool pads and one from the kitchen floor, after running after a nappy- less DS for two and a half hours and turning my back at the crucial moment! Doc tested both and was able to use both.
