Occasional but ongoing tummy ache in 3 yo

My 3yo has been complaining of tummy ache on and off for the last couple of weeks. He's clearly in pain, holding his tummy and making whiny noises (I'm not saying that to be horrid, but it's the best way to describe his actions) rather than speaking, at which he is usually good.

It never seems bad enough to go to the doctors about, but clearly he isn't right either. On a couple of occasions he's also vomited, but has no diarrhoea and when he isn't tummy achey, he's right as rain.

We've been on holiday so haven't been eating brilliantly but it started just before that, and we didn't go abroad (although we live in the US, so I guess we're already 'abroad', but we didn't go far)so I'm not putting it down to funny water or usual holiday maladies.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm loathe to suggest food intolerances, although that seems like the logical suggestion. It's not milk, because he has half a pint twice a day without fail. He had half a bagel at 9am this morning, and was sore at 3pm, but is that too long for wheat to take to hurt? My other kids and I have never shown any sensitivity to any kind of ingredient so I'm a bit of a novice.

Any suggestions welcome! Thanks.

Hmm I think I'd be a bit concerned about a grumbling appendix and get him checked.

Thanks. What's a grumbling appendix? I thought you either had appendicitis or you didn't.

It's basically chronic rather than acute appendicitis so it flares up but doesn't initially be very severe pain.
