Hi my 2 dcs have been hosting head lice for months now and its driving me nuts. I've tried full marks solution, cleaned all bedding and clothes with hoods ect and there still coming back. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone recommend another product maybe?

Thankyou :-)

Have you tried Hedrin? www.hedrin.co.uk/whyhedrin/

I would guess they are picking it up from somebody who is not treating their child.

Thanks for that I was thinking of trying that one. Seen it advertised on TV but wasn't sure.

I think the problem is that you have treated the lice but you are leaving at least one louse behind. In my experience the only way to properly get rid of lice is to wet comb every day until you see no more lice on the comb - and then go to every other day until you see no more lice on the comb. This will take about 3 weeks which is the life cycle of the louse - that way you can be sure you have them all. It's a real pain and it takes ages but it does work. Soak the head in conditioner and then take the hair in sections and comb with the nit comb and rinse as you go.

Good luck.

Thanks for that advice Monikar. I will try that regime and hopefully the little critters will be gone :-)

I am another who thinks wet combing is the very best way. It is tedious. It does require at least 2 weeks of wet combing but is very very effective as total eradication

Probably not very helpful but my ds had headlice I treated (sunflower oil, clingfilm plastic nitty gritty type comb) then we just straightaway gave him a number 3.

Found a couple of eggs same day and next day but nil since.
Touch wood!

We chose those things as a combination of what was suggested on threads on here and what we had in the cupboard (think threads said coconut oil)

Nitty gritty comb and comb and comb and comb. Then tie hair back ALWAY at school.

We've been through the cycle loads and are only at the end of year 1! My DD's long hair seems to attract them from other children as I kept combing and finding no eggs but one large louse, time and time again. As long as I kept combing the louse that was head hopping didn't get a chance to lay but it is sooooo tedious.

I've tried all the lotions but the only thing that worked for me, and was recommended by the pharamcist ... ( and a ramdom woman next to me in the queue) is a cheap bottle of conditioner and a nitty gritty comb. Every other day to every three days we wash their hair in the bath, slather on conditioner and then comb the conditioner out and wipe it onto a piece of white stuff like loo roll or kitchen roll . Then you can see what is coming out each time and squash the bastards and keep check of falling or rising numbers.

Oh and I put some tea tree oil into the conditioner bottle and shake it in. Is supposed to act as a deterrent (don't think it works but doesn't actually hurt if not on their head neat.

Good luck - it's boring as hell but does work.

It's grim isn't it TBH that's why we shaved his head, since he is a boy we can, it was summer anyway, and it hopefully protects others

I feel your pain - my eyesight is shoot to pieces from the feckersHmm. Thing is I can see the eggs but so tiny that the comb doesn't get them. I just wish there was some overnight liquid that would actually work

monikar · 02/09/2013 19:50

It is such a pain, it really is. I don't know if it actually works but with my DD when she was younger I used to plait her hair really tightly to try and prevent re-infestation.

Janx if you can see the eggs they will hatch in a couple of days - then use your comb to get them out before they get to adult size. I don't think the liquid is that effective in my experience - the combing is better but it does take ages. I know what you mean about your eyesight - I was the same!

I've used the Hedrin Once gel and a Nitty Gritty comb. At least everything I combed out was dead unlike with the Lyclear. Full Marks was ok but I try to swap between that and Hedrin hoping that they don't become resistant. I comb daily and repeat the treatment after a week and it seems to work, until she's back in school for a few weeks and she gets them again.
