My ds is two and had his adenoids and tonsils out on the 10th aug (just over 2 weeks ago). It went well but we had to go back to hospital as he was dehydrated. Came out two nights later and been recovering at home since.
he has suffered bless him and I think I certainly wasn't prepared for what a major op this really is
But now we are at the stage of he should be recovered according to all the info. However he still seems quite poorly. He looks really pale and his neck looks stiff.
He has no temp and is quite Happy (ish ) .
I am just not sure if I am expecting too much at this stage and need to Give him a bit more time to recover or should I be concerned?
Does anyone have any experience or advice for me. Thanks.

It is a horrible operation to recover from. I had it as an adult and the recovery time is longer than for a child but I would say by 15 days post OP I was we'll on my way to feeling better. As your DS is little I would be a bit concerned if he still seems ill and would take him to the dr's to be on the safe side.

I'm sure he's fine, not everyone recovers at the same rate

dd2 had her tonsils and adenoids out aged barely 2 - and it was really three weeks before she had fully bounced back. Till then, she was pale and tired - but no longer in pain (pain for at least 10 days though).

I think a general anaesthetic takes a toll for a while - and an op is an op, plus this can be a painful one! Is your ds's neck really stiff, or is he just 'guarding' it in memory of the pain, do you think? Is he drinking and eating?

If worried, do go see your GP - but my memory is definitely of a poorly looking child (skinny spider with black circles under eyes springs to mind!) for a few weeks post op. Then, she blossomed Smile

Thank you elibean you have put my mind at rest a little. He is eating and drinking fine Although still thinks he has a little way to go with getting his appetite back up.
You could be right about the neck thing. It just looks like it did when he used to get tonsillitis.
We are so fed up with Dr's etc. That I don't want to rush him up there just yet either. He has a big fear now bless him.
I may Give him a few more days.

Poor little mite. I would give it a few more days, unless he seems to be in pain or anything else out of the ordinary. If you think about it, even adults take a while to get over a general anaesthetic - and an op at age 2 is bound to feel a tad traumatic, no matter how well handled by everyone involved Smile

I hope you look back with as much relief at having it done as we did, and still do!

Yes I Hope so too. I'm sure we will as he basically had tonsillitis continuously towards the end.
I just can't wait for him time be better now with a new lease of life - he's been through so much!
