Flat head syndrome

Just wondering what everyones experiences are with this and their LOs really

Did you receive treatment? Did it sort itself out, if so at what age?

My son was born with a flat head. He's now 8 months old and there has been little, if any, improvement

I have tried the whole repositioning thing etc and more tummy time but still nothing

My son had a very flat head, so much so that the GP referred him to a consultant to be checked. He was x-rayed (quite traumatic getting a 4 month old to lie still) but the results were found to be absolutely normal. Once the docs had reassured us that there was nothing wrong to be honest it stopped bothering me. I did put hats on him quite a lot though when we were out! By the time he was around 18 months/2 years, his head looked pretty normal. Luckily he had a lot of hair from early on so this helped "cover up" the flatness. Unless you're worried that there's some medical reason for the flatness then try not to worry - it will gradually even out. After my experience, I looked round the family and realised that both my Dad and my sister had similarly shaped heads! Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply.

My previous HV seemed quite worried about it. But I've moved home since so swapped GPs and HVs and this new HV doesn't seem bothered by it. So I don't know what to think. Do you think I should mention it at our next check up? She's due to do his developmental check in 2 weeks x

If you're worried (and your previous HV was) then it might be better making a GP appointment. A doctor will be better placed to judge whether this needs looking into. Also, if it did, the GP would be the one to do the referral. Try not to fret though (useless, I know!) - most probably there's nothing wrong and it will gradually change shape as he grows. Good luck!

Think I will make a GP appointment, if only to put my mind at ease. Thank you x
