Toddler Diarrhoea?? Help!

Sorry in advance if TMI!

DS2 is 21mths and has an allergy to cows milk and is currently under a dietician. For the past 5 months he has had constant diarrhoea, Some samples were sent off to check for an infection which all came back clear and when i raised it with the dietician when we last saw her in June she said it was Toddler Diarrhoea. .

I have this morning been back to the GP (our next dietican appt isnt until January) as i am concerned that it is getting worse. Most days he is having 5-6 explosive poo's, normally so bad that they leak everywhere, regularly contain undigested food, foul smelling and most recently have large globs of mucous in them. I was also concerned that he was loosing weight. The doctor has weighed him this morning and he assures me this is not the case and he must just have 'shot up' in length as he is still between the 25th and 50th percentile. The doctor has rather reluctantly said he will refer DS2 onto a specialist although I have no idea how long this will actually take.

I am starting to wonder if it could be another un-diagnosed allergy and feel so sorry for him as he now hates having his nappies changed as his poor little bottom is red raw most of the time? Does anyone have any experience with toddler diarrhoea and allergies? I have also been reading that increasing the fat content in his diet could help? If anyone has any suggestions on how to do this while keep his diet free from dairy it would be really appreciated.

Both my Twin boys have CMP allergy, they also have allergy to Soya. Is he taking any Soya products? If so I would try and stop the soya and see what happens, our NHS dietitian advised us that Soya allergy is common in kids with CMP allergy.
One of my boys favorite meals is either chicken or salmon dipped in olive oil then rolled in breadcrumbs cooked in the oven. But if trying to increase fat just fry them.

Avocado is full of good fats also. Mine liked it with peanut butter in a sandwich or on toast (white bread until the loose stools stop)

Thanks for that. He is having lots of soya products....we have been using this as an alternative to dairy since a very young age. But we have only just recently (last 5mths or so) been experiencing the problems with diarrhoea so I'm not sure it would be that?! The avocado suggestion and salmon & breadcrumb suggestions sound good. Always feel like I am scrabbling round trying to find things for him to have! Hmm

I would maybe still consider reducing the soya just encase. We used Oatly milk and pura veg spread (not the soya one), the Oatly is a bit more expensive than the soya milk but might be worth a swap for a month just to see. No difference in Calcium in them just make sure you get the NON organic one as the organic one has no calcium.
One of my boys (4yrs old) has almost grown out of his CMP allergy, just can't drink milk, the other can have small amounts of cheese, yoghurt and butter now. There is light at the end of the forever checking ingredient label tunnel!

If you think it is straightforward toddler diarrhoea have you looked at the amount of fruit he is eating. I know mine ate loads (it's difficult thinking of dairy free snacks), perhaps reducing fruit intake (bananas are ok though) no wholemeal bread or cereal and increase the fat intake (as you already stated)
Have you tried Coconut oil(It's solid like butter not oily) in his food? Mine like it spread on rice cakes or crackers for snack. I've heard of people using it in mashed veg/potatoes also.

Thanks for the advice. I'm really hoping he will grow out of it but we have tried a couple of time reintroducing and he has reacted again.

He doesn't eat a lot of fruit...the occasional apple or banana but that's about it as I've struggled to find many he likes. He is quite picky at times...will one day eat tons of something and then a couple of days later refuse point blank to even put it in his mouth?!

I think we will have to try cutting out the soya and see if that helps. Where can I get the coconut oil from? Also do you have any dairy and soya free pudding ideas we could try?

DS had toddler diarrhoea, no allergies though. Avoiding squash and excessive amounts of fruit/fruit juice can help, and a relatively high fat diet too.

DS didn't have any squash then anyway, I chose not to restrict fruit because he loves it, and he did grow out of it. It mainly affected him up to around 2.5ish, maybe a little longer - I was worried how we would ever be able to toilet train him when he poo was always so loose, but it wasn't a problem.

He was seen by a paed at around 15m, had some blood tests and stool samples to rule out coeliac etc and found nothing wrong. I was reassured, but TBH I had been upfront that I didn't suspect coeliac anyway as he wasn't quite right but not 'failing to thrive' either.

They did send a stool sample away to test it wasn't a tummy infection but that all came back clear. They haven't even mentioned testing him for coeliac...which to me seems like the obvious thing to do considering he has other allergies and so that it can at least be ruled out. The doctor we saw yesterday didn't even examine him, which seems to me like it would be a basic first step?!?!

I bought the coconut oil from Holland and Barrett www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=690&prodid=733

For puddings we did rice pudding or Blancmange or Birds custard powder made up with Oatly milk.
Also used to make up Oatly Jelly which was good as it would last for a few days. Just melt normal jelly with a tiny bit water in microwave, then wait till cooled a bit(Oatly tends to split if mixed with boiling water) then make up to 1 pint with oatly.

Just Roll Puff Pastry is dairy free if you want to make some dairy free sausage rolls to up the fat intake.

Thanks for that will pop to our local h&b to see if I can get it. Good pudding ideas too. Grin
