No obvious pain, swelling or other symptoms. Do I need to take him to the docs or just keep an eye on him?

Take him to docs, this happened with my dd at a similar age, they need to check it isn't a condition caused by infection called irritable hip. They will probably watch and wait and it will go away itself but you need to get it checked. Hope he's fine Smile.

I would keep an eye on if that is only symptom.

Ginformation · 22/08/2013 08:04

Go to docs. (I am a gp). Needs hips checking.

tywysogesgymraeg · 22/08/2013 08:07

You sure he hasn't just slept awkwardly?
I would go to doc if limp persists after a few days.

countingdown · 22/08/2013 08:11

You will have to get him checked out. When my little boy woke up with a limp we ended up calling nhs direct who sent us to a&e - just where we wanted to be on a busy Saturday! We felt totally ridiculous, but they were very serious about the whole thing, and he was checked thoroughly. They couldn't find anything wrong and he was walking normally within a day or 2. I'm sure it's something and nothing, but do get it checked.

Thanks for replying. It doesn't appear to be getting better. Didn't want to over react but think I will make an appt with doc to be on the safe side. Googled up and hip prob seems a possibility as mentioned by a couple if people here. Will let u know outcome!

No appointments til next week with doc... but can see a nurse. Have made appt for 5 - will send him in to nursery and see how it goes!

What did the nurse say? If he is still limping I would take him to A&E tomorrow. Not wanting to scare you, but a limp without injury can be a sign of a rare but important condition that needs assessing ASAP this is reliable info

chickensaladagain · 22/08/2013 19:49

You have a child under 5 with hip pain but no injury and they can't see you until Tuesday??

I'd be complaining, they should make time for you

My dd was hospitalised with hip pain when she was 2 it was not a fun time!

Hope your lo is feeling better

MegGriffin · 22/08/2013 23:51

my dd had the same when she was 2. she had an unexplained limp and was sent straight to hospital where after various tests was diagnosed with irritable hip. we had a few folliw ups and she got better over a coyple of months. I would push for an appointment, good luck.

MegGriffin · 22/08/2013 23:52

please excuse typos I'm on my phone.

LoveSewingBee · 23/08/2013 08:21

Not very good that the GP cannot give you an urgent appointment.

I would see the nurse and also make an appointment with the GP. You need to exclude irritable hip and some other serious (but quite rare) causes.

Hope he is better soon.

HumphreyCobbler · 23/08/2013 08:24

when my dd had this, with a temp, we were admitted to rule out anything nasty. It was irritable hip caused by tonsillitis, but they did take it very seriously just in case.
