Is this 'just teething' or something else?

DD is almost 13 months and for the past 2 months she has had a non-stop disgustingly snotty nose. It is constantly streaming and I have to wipe it every few minutes. It is thick, greeny-yellow sticky snot and has been incessant for 2 months...it doesn't come and go, it is incessant. It does tend to come more out of one nostrill than the other, but it is both. I have to wash her bed sheets and sleeping bag every day because they just get covered in it. Her nose is red raw from the constant wiping, but I can't not wipe it...I just do it as gently as possible with a flannel.

I originally put it down to teething, then I thought it may be a bit of hayfever, but because of the colour of it I decided it probably wasn't an allergy. She doesn't have any other cold symptoms and doesn't seem ill, but it's just been going on far longer than I thought it would if it was teething.

In the past couple of weeks it's been getting a bit bloody so I took her to the doctor earlier this week. The doctor was pleasant enough, but I was in and out within a couple of minutes and she said it was just teething and I had to ride it out. SHe did take her temp but that was it.

It's still getting no better and tonight she had a nosebleed. I'm staying at my parents house at the moment and my mum used to be a paediatric nurse and she's not convinced it's just teething. She wants me to take her back to the doctor but it's a small practice and I know I'll get the same doctor who will probably just dismiss it as teething again!

She's my 2nd baby but my DS didn't have anything like this when he was teething...he had quite an easy time of it. So please tell me, does this sound like pretty standard teething symptoms or could it be something else?

It sounds like chronic sinusitis to me, but I am not a doctor either. I believe sinusitis is not often diagnosed in very young children but I have it on good authority from our paed that it can present in toddlers. The drainage out of one side is what made me think of sinusitis TBH. Yellow-green snot for such a long time, and on only one side, doesn't sound particularly like teething to me Hmm.

Alternatively, could your DC have poked something up their nose - like a foreign object?! Does the drainage smell unpleasant?

Thanks both and thanks for that link MoreSnow.

Ragusa, the discharge is out of both nostrils but always starts on the right side and more comes out of her right nostril. But plenty comes out of the left side too! I would have thought that if it was something like sinusitus though, there would be some other symptoms wouldn't there? I've had blocked sinuses before and it was quite painful around my nose, eyes and forehead. But she's not showing any other cold-type symptoms, no high temperature, no cough or any discomfort...in fact she's fine in herself but just producing copious amounts of snot! No smell with the discharge.

I think I will go back to the docs...it doesn't sound right does it.

I think it's possible to have chronic sinusitis without loads of pain etc. Could it be allergy- related? Acually, I think hayfever can cause chronic sinusitis and nosebleeds now I come to think of it. I def think you should take her back to the GP - maybe you will get a keen young locum in this holiday period ;)

I did actually think it might be hayfever for a while. I went to the pharmacist and they gave me children's Piriton which for a very short time helped (for about half an hour!). But deep within my very limited medical knowledge, I know that nasal discharge from allergies tends to be clear, yellow indicates some kind of infection.

My mum (who used to be a nurse) wasn't too concerned by the nosebleed. It wasn't a bad one...just slightly alarming when it's a 1yo. It happened in the bath and DM reckoned it was probably just that some of the hardened mucus up her nose softened and came out in the bath and started bleeding. A bit like a child picking their nose I guess. It stopped pretty quickly. Sadly the snot didn't.

Thanks for your thoughts Smile

Do you have air conditioning in your home? Is it on all the time at the moment? that can make nasal passages dry and prone to both infection and nosebleeds. Not that you can do much about it if you live in a hot country - humidifier, maybe?

FWIW one of my children is more prone to nosebleeds than the other and has had a few, usually as a result of poking too hard Wink
Anyhoo, I think the doc needs to be hassled :)
