does anyone elses dc have 3rd nerve palsy?

Took dd2 (10mo) to the opthomotrist (sp) 2 months ago regarding a possible squint. During the examination there was mention that she cannot look up, there seemed to be too much skin on her eye lids and that her sight was no where near where it should be. I was told not to worry re the sight as it was done at the end of a 20 min test and could just be dd not playing ball as she was bored and was also nor very happy at just having a patch over her eye.

She was referred to the hospital for further tests and a second look at her eyes.

I've taken her today and the opthomotrist (sp) has diagnosed her with third nerve palsy and referred her to the consultant for a possible op.

They've said there are 3 options, just operate on her eyelids and hope that helps but possibly may require a second surgery. Operate on the nerve and the eye lids and then monitor once a month to see if she requires glasses. Final option is to give her glasses and monitor the situation.

Has anyone else been in this position or has experience of what is more likely of the three options?

Tia.

Wait until you see the ophthalmologist, they will run through options and find out if it is congenital .

Sounds like the orthoptist gave you some duff info there!

First option will be to see ophthalmologist , who will do a glasses test and check health of eyes etc , the third nerve palsy may not be correct.

Does her eye turn out and down a little and her eyelid droop?

idiot55 · 08/08/2013 09:04

Sorry haven't answered your question there!

No way of knowing what treatment will be, if any.

If glasses not needed and the eyelid droop doesn't come over her pupil they may do notHing.

Her eye lids droop and they said they cover half her pupil. She lifts her chin to see. They did say it was potentially damaging but she has found a way to cope.

One eye turns in and she cannot look up using her eyes.

Feel I should mention, her sight isn't great, according to the two tests she's now had done. She's on average 4 marks/points away from where a 10mo 'should' be. They did say that these results alone would mean she's referred to the consultant.

Google 'ptosis'

mouseymummy · 08/08/2013 13:50

I've had a look at that online but it all seems to be centred on adults and being caused by illness or trauma.... Some bits do seem to fit better than 3rd nerve.

Thank you for the replies!

Try this link: here

It suggests if there are associated problems such as the squint this is due to the inability of the eye sight to develop and surgery is recommended asap. I have also read somewhere that beyond a certain age (12 months?) even if the physical eye sight is improved the brain cannot process the improvement - please push for a consultation sooner rather than later as it sounds as if you LO's sight is quite badly affected.

The consultant appt will be within the next month, it should be pretty quick from here on in, hopefully.

Thank you so much for the link.

Hi just wanted to add that dropping eyelids (ptosis) can cause the surface if the eye to be irregularly shaped a condition called astigmatism ! This could explain poor eyesight but glasses for this should help over time !
